    The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking at Part-Time Counselor.

     

    The counselor’s responsibility is to provide comprehensive counseling services to meet the needs of UMPI students. This position provides assessments, clinical interventions, education, diagnosis, and advocacy for students who are affected by a social, physical, emotional, mental health or substance abuse issue. This position also consults with faculty, staff, and student staff on mental health concerns, provides training to various campus groups, and also serves as a member of the CARE Team and the Threat Assessment Team.

     

    This position will work 15 hours per week from August 15 - May 15 of each year. Typically, this position has worked hours in the late afternoon/early evening on Monday through Friday, however, this can be negotiable as long as the agreed upon hours are provided each week for students to schedule appointments.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide intake assessments of students seeking counseling, both on a scheduled and walk-in basis when available.

    • Offer individual and group counseling and referral for students focusing on personal, social, family, organizational, and academic problems.

    • Consult with university faculty and staff regarding student mental health concerns and mental health needs.

    • Serve as a consultant to campus groups and programs, such as international students, residential student organizations, etc., to identify and alleviate sources of student

     

    stress and improve the mental health climate on campus.

     

    • Supervise graduate trainees in the areas of assessment and interventions

    • Maintain confidential client records and case notes.

    • Serve as a member of the UMPI CARE team, which meets bi-weekly on Monday afternoons.

    • Serve as a member of the Threat Assessment Team. This group is convened when specific situations present themselves that require immediate assessment.

    • Assist with the administration of telehealth services.

    • Make referrals to community resources as needed.

    • Other duties as assigned

     

    The university will take into consideration the salary of current UMS employees in cases of transfer or promotion, based on skills and experience.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Master’s degree in counseling or social work with appropriate licensure.

    + One (1) to Three (3) years of clinical experience.

    + The ability to assess, diagnose and treat mental health and substance abuse disorders.

    + Knowledge and Skills:

    + Knowledge of counseling theories and models, particularly short-term therapy.

    + Skills in clinical assessment and interventions

    + Skills in consulting within an educational institution.

    + Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people.

    + Awareness of standards of practice and ethical guidelines

    + Ability to deal with emergency psychiatric situations and work with community agencies for referrals.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Doctorate in Psychology or Counseling (Ph.D., Ed.D., or Psy.D.)
