    Job Title: Custodian - Grounds

    Job Description

    Grounds custodians are responsible for maintaining the outdoor spaces across the University, ensuring they are clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing. This role involves a variety of tasks aimed at preserving the beauty and functionality of the grounds.

    Responsibilities

    + Perform lawn care duties such as mowing, edging, fertilizing, and watering to maintain healthy turf.

    + Plant, prune, and trim trees, shrubs, and flowers to ensure vibrant plant life.

    + Remove weeds from gardens, flowerbeds, and other landscaped areas.

    + Clear leaves, litter, and other debris from grounds and pathways.

    + Remove snow and ice from walkways and parking lots during winter months, with on-call duties for precipitation events outside of normal business hours.

    + Safely operate landscaping equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.

    + Assist in the operation and maintenance of nursery operations, greenhouses, and plants.

    + Propagate, maintain, and nurture plant stock while monitoring nursery and greenhouse stock.

    + Install landscape designs by planting a variety of materials as per the Nursery Supervisor's guidance.

    + Water, fertilize, and mulch plants.

    + Operate multiple types of garden machinery and perform basic preventive maintenance.

    + Perform grounds maintenance work including weeding, seeding, mowing, and other seasonal tasks.

    Essential Skills

    + Ability to stand, bend, squat, and walk for the full duration of the shift outdoors exposed to all weather elements.

    + Experience in outdoor cleaning and maintenance of grounds and landscaping.

    + Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.

    + Ability to use basic gardening/horticultural tools.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift 50 lbs.

    + Maintains a high degree of professionalism.

    + Possesses flexibility to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

    + Strong verbal communication and listening skills.

    Work Environment

     

    This role requires working entirely outdoors, facing various weather conditions. You will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of university grounds, with tasks that may involve getting dirty. The position includes a 1st shift from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, with a mandatory overtime for snow removal during winter, along with a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks.

    This is a Contract position based out of Bloomington, Indiana.

     

    Pay and Benefits

     

    The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $15.00/hr.
