Job Description:
+ Responsible for cage changes and collection of cultures from within isolators, daily health checks, preparing supplies for autoclaving, building/wrapping cylinders under direct supervision, autoclaving of cylinders, assembly/ sterilizing/recycling of new isolators, delivery of samples to diagnostic lab, ABSL-2 husbandry when needed. Is responsible for carrying out the Animal Care Services' (ACS) directives and SOPs as governed by the Animal Welfare Act and all applicable rules and regulations. Provides basic animal husbandry to a variety of species being used for biomedical research. This includes housing animals, cleaning cages, feeding, watering, weighing animals and restraining animals.
+ Provides technical and husbandry support to the Import/Export, Aquatics services, and Rodent husbandry. Observes and reports animals for signs of illness, injury, and physical or behavioral changes. Under supervision, performs euthanasia via cervical dislocation once approved to perform or carbon dioxide with approved alternate secondary method. Observes, documents, and reports changes in environmental parameters outside acceptable ranges, e.g. temperature, humidity, lighting, etc. Restrains and handles animals for treatment.
+ Sanitizes equipment and animal holding facilities. Ensures housing and environmental compliance with the "NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Maintains supply stock in all assigned rooms for daily use of investigative staff.
+ May be assigned to cage wash operations and will perform routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, monitoring equipment for proper functioning and maintaining sanitary conditions. Operates washers and ensures that cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order by cleaning, and preventive maintenance. Will perform routine start-up and shut down procedures of cage wash operations. Operates autoclave to sterilize or decontaminate caging equipment Will assist in receiving and rotating feed and supplies. Transports caging supplies between animal rooms and cage wash rooms. Will sanitize cage washing rooms and other support areas, such as hallways and storage rooms. May be asked to provide guidance, instruction and direction to cage wash trainees following directives provided by facility supervisor/manager.
+ Required to keep up to date on SOP’s in Policy Manger and input their time worked in time Clock Plus using facility computers during normal working hours. Ensure that Leave/OT Request and weekend change requests are submitted timely to area manager.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Expected Salary:
$19.44/Hour
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relevant experience; or certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or above by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer HS degree or higher with at least 1 year experience with research animal care at a research institution or other appropriate environment and one year of relevant experience; or certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Maintains a valid state driver’s license.
