    Job Summary

    The Department of Botany & Plant Pathology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor: Population and Disease Dynamics of Cereal Pathogens position.

     

    We are searching for a tenure-track assistant professor position inPopulation and Disease Dynamics of Cereal Pathogensin the Department of Botany & Plant Pathology. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a robust and extramurally funded research program that will address the epidemiology and genetics of cereal diseases in agroecosystems and will apply this knowledge to inform breeding and disease management issues. Teaching associated with the position will contribute to the graduate and/or undergraduate curriculum in Botany and Plant Pathology, Biological Data Sciences, or related programs. All research topics within the area of population and disease dynamics of cereal pathogens will be considered; however, preference will be given to candidates who show the greatest potential to1)combine field experiments and molecular/genomic data to address population-level research in fungal pathogens of wheat,2)work collaboratively with the Oregon State University Wheat Team, extension, growers, and/or stakeholders as part of interdisciplinary teams,3)advance departmental excellence, 4) work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin, and 5) communicate research to broad audiences.

    Key Responsibilities

    50% Research and Scholarship:maintain an externally funded research program conducting original and independent research in Population and Disease Dynamics of Cereal Pathogens that is relevant to the missions of the department, college, and university. Aspire to maintain and enhance national and international standing, in part through collaborative research projects with colleagues at OSU , nationally, and/or internationally. Scholarship and creative activities will be primarily in Population and Disease Dynamics of Cereal Pathogens. Activities include, but are not limited to, peer-reviewed publication of scientific research, development of scientific technologies/methodologies, integration of knowledge leading to new interpretations, presentations at regional, national and international conferences, and participation on steering committees, agency panels, and science working groups where the outcome is a fundamental change in the field’s direction. Innovation in teaching strategies and development of new educational approaches may be included.

     

    30% Teaching:primary responsibility for two courses per year at the undergraduate or graduate levels in Botany and Plant Pathology, Biological Data Sciences, or related program. Participate in graduate or undergraduate level seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and/or discussion groups as appropriate.

     

    10% Mentoring, Advising, and Supervision:mentor and serve as research advisor to graduate students in their advanced degree programs in Botany and Plant Pathology, or related programs; train and supervise personnel in conducting research at the undergraduate, graduate and/or postdoctoral/research assistant/associate levels, and serve on students’ committees.

     

    10% Service:all faculty are expected to be collegial members of their units, and to perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of their departments, colleges, and the University, and their professions. University service includes serving on the departmental, interdepartmental, program, college, and University committees, and serving the University-wide community of bioscience researchers including organizing workshops or assisting with development of community resources. Professional service includes, but is not limited to, reviewing manuscripts for journals and proposal for funding agencies, and involvement in professional organization.

    What You Will Need

    Ph.D. in Biology, Plant Biology, Genetics, Plant Pathology, or related field.

     

    Publication record in, or relevant to, Population and Disease Dynamics of Cereal Pathogens.

     

    Demonstrable commitment to departmental or group excellence.

     

    Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

     

    Ability to foster an inclusive and accessible learning environment

     

    This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

    Postdoctoral experience.

     

    Record of, or potential for, collaborative science including outreach to stakeholders.

     

    Quantitative skills related to analysis of large, complex data sets.

    Working Conditions / Work Schedule

    Standard faculty/academic office. Standard research laboratory, greenhouse, and field environments (e.g., eastern Oregon, where wheat is widely grown) Travel within Oregon required.
