    Job Title: Material Handling Mechanic Level 1

     

    Department: Maintenance

     

    FLSA: Non-Exempt

    General Function:

    The material handling mechanic performs preventative maintenance and repairs on all material handling equipment. This includes entry-level tasks such as loading tires and minor repairs on equipment such as control handles.

    Accountable and Reports to: Distribution Maintenance Supervisor; manager fleet/parts

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    Observe all safety and sanitation rules and regulations. Works under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor in the service and repair of all material handling equipment and batteries. Must be able to perform physical requirements exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly. Performs hoist checklist daily and monthly, as well as monthly P.M.’s on hoist. Performs preventative maintenance program for all material handling equipment. Reports to work when scheduled and on time. Adheres to company policies and departmental guidelines. All equipment repairs must be performed in a safe and timely manner so as not to cause lost productivity in the warehouse. Must be able to work independently.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics:

    + Must pass Distribution Physical and Drug Screen

    + Excellent diagnostic repair ability for overhaul of material handling equipment

    + Proven safety knowledge of repair and machine liability

    + Powered industrial equipment license required

    + Primary responsibilities require occasional very heavy lifting of parts and frequent medium to heavy lifting according to the Department of Labor Weight Classifications. This is a skilled position requiring manual, motor and finger dexterity, standing, bending, stooping, handling, carrying, driving, pushing, pulling, moving mechanical parts and visual acuity.

    Education and Experience:

    High school/trade school or equivalent experience. Courses in electrical maintenance or apprenticeships are required. At least 1 year of general maintenance experience and assembly experience is preferred. Knowledge of preventative care is a plus. Two years of directly related experience is preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    Must be able to perform the physical requirements by exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly

    Working Conditions:

    The duties of this position are performed in a warehouse setting. There is exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemicals or solvents, and electrical shock.

    Equipment Used to Perform Job:

    Must provide own hand tools. Standard tools (stand and metric) and equipment used for electrical maintenance and repair. Frequent use of diagnostic equipment and forklift. Uses telephone and computer.

    Financial Responsibility:

    If the job is performed incorrectly it could cost the company up to $25,000. Could cause injury to a warehouse employee if machine is not repaired correctly.

    Contacts:

    Has contact with parts suppliers and other department personnel in the warehouse.
