    Job Summary

    The Lineman Pre-Apprentice position is the beginning of a multi-step progression to Journeyman Lineman. A Pre-Apprentice Lineman is a trainee who builds skills and understanding to progress into Apprentice Lineman status and begin progressing toward a career as a Journeyman Lineman.

     

    Candidate for this position must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.

     

    EPB prefers candidates with previous pole climbing training and experience.

     

    Those accepted for the Lineman Pre-Apprentice Training Program are required to complete Linemen Pre-Apprentice Training Program Climbing School. Upon successful completion, the employee will be accepted as a Lineman Pre-Apprentice Trainee.

     

    At all stages, EPB reserves the right to determine if the Lineman Pre-Apprentice is meeting the requirements to progress in the program.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Understand and work in accordance with Federal, State Regulations TOSHA 1910.269, National Safety Code, and EPB Safety Rules.

    + Meet EPB's behavioral and cultural expectations around a commitment to work, attitude, and ability to work with others.

    + Assure timely and safe delivery of equipment, tools, and materials and assist as EPB management directs.

    + Learn and adhere to appropriate construction standards, codes, and written safety rules and procedures.

    + Job shadow field operations team members across various departments as EPB management directs.

    + Attend safety meetings and actively participate in safety awareness programs and activities.

    + Complete all necessary company training promptly.

    + Perform pole top and bucket rescue.

    + Incorporate an attitude of "Excellent Customer Service Comes First" and "Quality Work Enhances Reliability" into daily tasks.

    + Assist linemen in all functions of constructing, servicing, and maintaining EPB's electric transmission and distribution system.

    + Performs all types of manual labor, maintaining proper clearance from electric hazards.

    + Recognizes high voltage hazards.

    + Work regularly consists of digging holes, loading and unloading trucks, ground support for journeyman lineman, and assisting lineman with splicing wire and framing poles.

    + Properly rig loads and lines for lifting and pulling.

    + Sends tools and materials to the lineman as requested using a handline.

    + Assists in preparing journeyman linemen's and foremen's vehicles and tools for daily operations.

    + Drive and operate all types of utility equipment including lift trucks, line trucks, and auxiliary equipment.

    + Installs anchors.

    + Fills out trouble tickets on vehicles when required.

    + Keeps records of and understands materials used.

    + Use hand and power tools and equipment of the trade.

    + Capable of working after-hours in scheduled and unscheduled conditions and responding to after-hours call-outs.

    + Must work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and overtime for emergency outage situations.

    + Must be capable of heavy manual labor for extended periods, day or night, in all weather conditions.

    + Conduct groundwork

    + Install, repair, and maintain overhead and underground electrical power lines and auxiliary equipment.

    + Assure timely and safe delivery of equipment, tools, and materials, and assist as directed by EPB management.

     

    Education and Experience

     

    + High school diploma or a GED certificate.

     

    Certification(s) & Other Requirements

     

    + A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.

    + Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

    + Ability to read and comprehend operating and safety instructions on tools and materials.

    + Ability to apply sound judgment and understanding to carry out instructions provided by EPB Journeyman Lineman and management.

    + Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions.

    + Ability to regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally exert a force of up to 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and/or constantly exert pressure up to 20 pounds to move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    + The ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.

    + Ability to dig a 2' wide by 5' deep hole using hand tools

    + Ability to pass a fundamental work-related math test

    + Ability to report to work within 1 hour of the EPB Operations Center.

    + Ability to pass climbing school. Preferred candidates will have already had some climbing training or experience.

    + If a candidate has been previously accepted into the Pre-Apprentice Lineman position but did not complete climbing school, they are ineligible to apply for 365 calendar days.

     

    NOTE: Those employees in the Lineman Pre-Apprentice Training Program not making satisfactory progress or completing Craft Examinations shall remain in the Pre-Apprentice for three months and be brought before the Apprentice Council for recommended additional training. Failure to make satisfactory progress or complete a Craft Examination within the first year of employment shall result in termination.

     

    Physical Demands – Additional Information

     

    + While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation; and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    + Required to lift and manipulate weights up to 75-100 pounds.

    + Works within defined procedures; follows written or verbal instructions.

    + Hand and arm dexterity for using small tools to repair connections for primary, secondary, and services on poles, houses, or meter centers while working out of a bucket truck, off a pole using climbers, off a ladder, or standing on the ground.

    + 20/20 corrected vision and have sufficient color vision perception to distinguish normal color coding used in electric distribution and transmission work.

    + Ability to walk on uneven terrain in and around the work area during daylight and darkness.

    + Normal or corrected hearing proficiency to understand verbal instructions/information/warnings communicated from the top of the pole, from the ground position, and from 1 pole span to the next (approximately 75 meters).
