    The University of Southern Maine’s Department of Computer Science invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2026.

     

    We are seeking a dynamic and innovative teacher-scholar with expertise in areas such as machine learning, cloud computing, big data analytics, or applied statistics.

     

    This is an in-person position based on our Portland campus. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of our growing undergraduate and graduate data science programs, teach a 3-3 load, and engage in impactful research that includes mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. We are particularly interested in individuals who are committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and fostering strong connections with local industry and community organizations.

    The targeted starting date for this position is Fall 2026 and will pay a base salary of $90,000 plus benefits. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon our university culture of "student focused every day" and allows for regular participation in on-campus activities, meetings, and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Ph.D. in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

    + Evidence of ongoing research activities related to data science, statistics, operations research, or other computing fields.

    + Excellence in teaching data science through diverse methodologies that promote active learning and integrate technology to enhance the learning experience. Examples of modern computing pedagogies include project-based learning and flipped classroom models.

    + Experience with relevant software such as SQL, R, Python, or other relevant programming languages.

    + Demonstrated expertise in one or more core data science areas, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop), data security, data ethics, statistics, and causal inference.

    + Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor students.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Broadly trained, with the ability to teach a wide range of data science courses.

    + Familiarity with data science education principles and practices.

    + Familiarity with the Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Programs in Data Science.

    + A record of or a plan for grant and contract acquisition (both independent and collaborative).

    + Experience with interdisciplinary research and/or collaborations.

    + Plans to actively engage graduate and undergraduate students in research projects.

    + Experience teaching online courses in both synchronous and asynchronous formats.
