Posting Summary
The primary responsibility of this position is to perform laboratory sample processing for nucleic acids, including preparation for next-generation sequencing ( NGS ). The Senior Technician will ensure high-quality data generation through rigorous quality control and coordination of diverse sequencing workflows.
The Senior Technician will independently perform nucleic acid extraction, quantification, and quality assessment from a variety of sample types, and prepare high-quality libraries for a range of NGS applications, including RNA -Seq, whole genome sequencing, and amplicon sequencing. They will operate, maintain, and troubleshoot NGS platforms such as the Singular G4 and Oxford Nanopore, along with related instruments including the Agilent Bioanalyzer and Qubit. Responsibilities also include implementing and updating laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), supporting the data transfer and archival pipeline for all sequencing projects, and utilizing the iLab platform for sample submission and tracking, billing, reporting, and user communication. The technician will monitor and maintain laboratory supplies and reagents and assist in inventory control using Quartzy.
The position provides comprehensive technical support by assisting both clinical and basic science researchers in coordinating complex experimental designs, including multi-investigator and multi-institutional projects.
The individual will collaborate with other UVM core facilities (e.g., Microscopy Imaging Center, Flow Cytometry & Cell Sorting) to support cross-platform experimental designs and may be cross-trained to assist with instrumentation in these cores as needed. They will also be asked to provide technical training and mentorship to junior technicians, interns, and visiting students.
Additional responsibilities may include participating in outreach activities, such as designing and delivering presentations at approved scientific conferences to enhance UVM’s research visibility and contributing to publications in the field of genomics. The position may also involve occasional guidance and insight to undergraduate and graduate students and supporting the development and delivery of science outreach programs.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology, biomedical science or chemistry or related field and four to five years’ cellular & molecular biology, biomedical science or chemistry work experience required.
Desirable Qualifications
Leadership abilities to organize and coalesce effective teams for projects requiring inter and intra-core services required. Effective organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills required. Experience in the field of molecular biology in a supervisory capacity desirable. Ability to multi-task desirable. Familiarity with iLabs and OneNote, and/or Linux a plus.
Anticipated Pay Range $28.25-30.00/hr

A 120-day probationary period is required.
