About the Work Unit
The Machining Trades III position works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 3, Section 6 Maintenance Unit. The Unit exists to maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public.
About the Position
The Machining Trades III position will provide mechanical support to CDOT by installing, maintaining, servicing, and repairing heavy equipment and service vehicles to ensure transportation maintenance specialists' safe and productive operation.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
+ Design and fabricate special tools, parts, and attachments for equipment, as well as equipment repair for maintenance patrols;
+ Provide mechanical repairs include the use of percussion tools and specialized testing and calibration instruments;
+ Use of arc and MIG welders and oxygen/acetylene torch; and TIG welders.
+ Knowledgeable of different metals and alloys as well as the other welding rods and their applications;
+ Repair damaged equipment, such as snowplows, vehicle frames, wings, sanders, truck frames, mowers, loader buckets, pipes, fuel tanks, and hydraulic tanks;
+ Perform maintenance on various small engines, pumps, and hand tools;
+ Repair structures such as bridge expansion joints, bridge railing, cattle guards, and drainage grates;
+ Schedule equipment for repairs; coordinate with shop and vendors for exceptional repairs, warranty work, recall notices, and for compensating for work overload;
+ Research equipment work order history to aid in diagnostics and prescribed repairs; order parts, supplies, and materials for the repair equipment;
+ Prepare work orders and audit work orders entirely and accurately using SAP;
+ Travel to remote shop locations to include roadside assistance; often in adverse weather/road conditions to perform repairs on CDOT equipment;
+ Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
+ Work schedule is Monday thru Thursday 7:00 am - 5:30 pm year round.
+ The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to location of equipment, emergencies or inclement weather
+ CDOT provides all tools, PPE, and CDL training and testing
+ May be required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays
+ Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where they can be reached to respond to an emergency
+ Required to lift up to 70 lbs.
+ Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment
+ Required to operate CDOT vehicles
+ Frequent travel during the workday to perform field repairs, as well as to attend training and meetings
+ May be required to work in extreme temperatures, hot and cold, and weather conditions for long periods of time
+ Exposure to loud noises
+ Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin
+ Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock
+ Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls
+ Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 9-11,000 feet altitude
+ Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
+ New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
+ At least 5 years of skilled work experience in machining, fabricating, maintaining, welding, and/or installing precision devices, instruments, equipment, and/or structures; with at least one year of experience working with a CNC plasma cutter.
+ AND current certification in vertical structural welding (3G) and in overhead welding (4G). A copy of your certificates must be submitted with your application.
Substitutions:
+ A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years

+ A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

+ Required to be on-call and to perform s hift work
+ May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
+ Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays
+ New employees are required to take two weeks of maintenance training, while veteran CDOT employees are required to take one week of training each year. This training is completed in Aurora or via computer.

+ Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
+ Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
+ Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
+ Extensive experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations;
+ Knowledge and experience using a variety of tools/machinery to complete repairs including: mig welder, stick welder, press, iron worker, saw, plasma cutter, compressed oxygen-acetylene cutter, lathe, milling machine, grinders, mag drill, scraper, etc.;
+ Ability to weld mild steel in AWS DI.1 (structural welding), DI.5 (bridge welding), and D14.3 groups I-IV, stainless steel in 302L, 304L, 316L and aluminum 6061. Must be able to use all Electrode Classifications for SMAW, GMAW-S, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW-S, FCAW-G, and must be able to get heat seating from a Welding Procedure Specification;
+ Ability to perform horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding;
+ Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
+ Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments;
+ Use of innovative approaches when performing repairs, with consideration for available resources, budget, time, efficiency, and safety;
+ Ability to work lead and mentor employees;
+ Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills;
+ Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and project switching ability;
