    The Office of General Counsel has an immediate opening for a **_paralegal_** with relevant experience in reviewing contracts, maintaining corporate governance documents, providing litigation support, and conducting basic legal research. The paralegal is expected to work with the attorneys in the office and university clients on a broad range of matters impacting the university and its academic medical center, including, but not limited to, drafting and reviewing a variety of contracts related to healthcare law, compliance, employment law, experience in responding to discovery requests, including subpoenas and real estate. The paralegal will work primarily in the Litigation & Contested Matters and Business Transactions & Commercial Matters practice group but will also support other practice groups such as the Healthcare & Research, Compliance, and Student Affairs & Employment Matters practice group, based on need and interest.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    + Respond to discovery requests, including subpoenas.

    + Maintain online legal research service vendor registrations and contracts.

    + Draft and review contracts and other legal documents.

    + Gather information and assist with responses to subpoenas, administrative charges, and other litigation matters; collect and manage case documents and exhibits to pleadings, assist the attorneys in the office with preparation of and responses to discovery requests; and draft routine correspondence.

    + Support clients through legal contracting processes, negotiations, and document management.

    + Record and maintain records of meetings and compliance reports. Maintain databases of relevant documents and information as applicable. Assist with the maintenance of forms library.

    + Provide assistance with case settlements.

    + Research matters related to healthcare, sponsored research, employment, higher education in general, and other related matters.

    + Draft memoranda, chronologies and other analyses, releases, and other documents as needed and directed by the attorneys in the office.

    + Assist with engagement letters and conflict of interest waiver agreements.

    + Assist with sending bankruptcy and class actions notices to departments and in determining actionable claims for the University.

    + Assist with monitoring the University’s Hotline for incoming complaints and forwarding complaints to appropriate departmental contacts.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s Degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies, Business Administration correlated field or Certificate in Paralegal Studies from an accredited institution.

    + Five years of paralegal experience of progressively increasing responsibility.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Expertise in drafting, reviewing, and proofreading contracts and other legal documents.

    + Experience with civil procedure, particularly in Maryland state and federal courts.

    + Commitment to providing excellent customer service.

    + Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in a fast-paced environment, to handle multiple complex tasks, and to prioritize competing deadlines generated by multiple constituencies.

    + Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and collegially, orally and in writing, with JHU personnel at all levels of education, skill, and responsibility, as well as with outside counsel.

    + Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact.

    + Appropriate self-awareness, including when to escalate matters.

    + Proficiency in the use of Microsoft office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook), Adobe, WordPress, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and other relevant computer software.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Starting Salary Range: $24.25 - $42.50 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)

     

    Employee group: Full Time

     

    Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity. Not all candidates will qualify for the highest salary in the range.
