    Job Description

As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem-solving skills, and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty.

    Job Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington offers several professional Masters degrees, both on-campus and online, that are highly ranked in national surveys. On-campus programs are offered in the areas of Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, Construction, Energy, and Sustainable Infrastructure, Environmental Engineering, and Hydrology and Hydrodynamics. Online programs are offered in Supply Chain Transportation and Logistics, Sustainable Transportation, Construction Engineering, and Energy Infrastructure. These programs support students in advancing their careers and play an important role in the department; serving most of our graduate students and contributing significantly to department funds.

We are seeking a Director of Professional Programs to ensure these programs are responsive to the needs of our professional communities and function in an efficient and cost-effective manner, for example, by sharing resources and practices across programs. The Director is also tasked with establishing and maintaining strategic partnership with stakeholders internal and external to the University and developing and implementing a comprehensive recruitment strategy. All activities will require close collaboration with existing department staff and faculty leads.

    Position Purpose & Complexities

This position provides leadership and administrative oversight of our professional masters degree programs. This position collaborates with the Chair, staff, and faculty in developing new initiatives that strengthen and expand CEE relationships with industry and academic partners and raises visibility of the programs. This position reports to the Department Chair and is expected to identify ways to reduce program operating cost while maintaining program quality. One complexity of this position is the variety of operational and delivery models for the programs, particularly for the four online degrees. While ensuring ongoing delivery of all programs, the Director will look for opportunities to integrate program operations and reduce redundant efforts to better serve students and make the best use of staff resources.

The position requires the ability to multitask, prioritize job responsibilities, and utilize independent judgment in project planning, management, and implementation. It involves the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and members of industry across all areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the College of Engineering, and Continuum College. This position is tasked with program growth and requires the enlistment of relevant stakeholder participation in development and strategic planning.

The growth of the professional masters degree programs is a key goal for the department, and as such, this position plays a critical role in providing direction and leadership in recruiting and marketing. The Director will consider ways of restructuring existing programs in support of this goal and set growth target metrics with the Department Chair. The Professional Programs Collaborative within the College of Engineering will serve as a source of collaboration and support.

The ideal candidate will be team oriented with a collaborative approach to work responsibilities and the desire to interact extensively with colleagues while being flexible, independent, and self-motivated. Superior administrative and organization skills, with the demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of varied, detailed tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment.
