    Salary Range: Min. $21.78/hr - Max $34.85/hr

     

    The Forensic Autopsy Technician maintains related records and certificates, prepares equipment, supplies and bodies for autopsy, assists with the performance of autopsies, stores tissues and specimens, and maintains the area and all equipment and supplies in a clean and organized fashion. Also is responsible for maintaining appropriate professional communications and client relations with all external and internal contacts required in the performance of this position. This position requires the exercise of sound judgement and responsibility and works under the direct supervision of the pathologist assistant and the pathologist/resident during autopsy procedures.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    + Assist Pathologist Assistant with input into the writing of departmental Policies and Procedures as well as assisting with the creation of competency evaluations of the morgue positions.

    + Assist the pathologist during the autopsy, assist and support Medical Examiner / Coroners’ Pathologist with the collection of trace evidence, and Assist coroner / coroner's physician in medical legal autopsies.

    + Maintains departmental inventory and submits supply requisitions to supervisor as required.

    + Work cooperatively with others (employees, patients' families, funeral directors, etc.) to accomplish tasks and goals.

    + Demonstrate basic keyboarding skills and knowledge of the laboratory computer system (LIS) to perform inquiries and autopsy accessioning.

    + Ensure tissues and specimens are stored and labeled appropriately, as well as complete requisitions for tests requested by pathologist and ensure delivery of specimens to appropriate laboratory for analysis.

    + Photograph, weigh organs, and maintain autopsy-related records.

    + Train new staff as directed.

    + Maintain workflow of morgue and report issues to appropriate Pathologist Assistant.

    + Practice safety and infection control according to established standard operation procedures (SOPs).

    + Ensure security and confidentiality are maintained at all times.

    + Obtain the patient medical record and prepare the body for autopsy by a pathologist.

    + Prepare and set up equipment, tools and supplies needed for the autopsy.

    + Clean all areas and equipment regularly as well as dispose of specimens properly according to SOPs.

    + Prepare specimens for and arrange transportation to the State Lab and/or Police Lab.

    + Assist the pathologist in preparation of tissue(s) needed for educational pathology conferences and to clean the area afterwards.

    + Participate in the monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement of quality within Autopsy / Morgue Areas.

    + Report work related issues to the Pathologist Assistant for guidance/resolution.

    + Initiate monthly on call schedule

    Qualifications

    + Associate's Degree in Biology, Mortuary Science or Forensic - required

    + Bachelor's Degree in Forensic - preferred

    + 1-3 years of specifically related experience in college, with autopsies or with relevant laboratory experience - required
