Job Summary and Qualifications

The Surgical Technologistis responsible forassistingwith the delivery of qualitysurgicalcare throughplanning andanticipatingthe surgeon/procedure needs and coordinatingwith the circulating perioperative nurse during surgical procedures. Demonstratescompetency in surgical technologyto include allmajor surgical specialty areas;includesgathering and preparingsterile supplies, equipment, preparing/maintainingthe sterile field andassistingthe surgeon by supplyingsterile instruments/supplies tothe sterile field in a safe and efficient manner. Performsroutine scrubroleas well specifically delegated department duties. Consistently followscurrent AORNand regulatorystandards and established policies and procedures of the System.

+ Plansfor and obtainsthe equipment and suppliesneededfor assigned procedures according to physicians' preference and specific patient needs.

+ Prepares equipment and supplies according to manufacturer's recommendations and specifications forusesduring surgical procedures.Opens sterile packs,instrumentsand supplies for each procedure according toestablishedaseptic techniques and protocols.

+ Monitors sterile field during procedure andtakes appropriate measurestoinsureintegrity of sterile field and maintenance of sterile techniques. Initiates corrective action for any break in technique.

+ Prepares medications and solutions for use during procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse, according to physician’s orders.

+ Maintains accountability for instruments,spongesand sharps, according to hospital policy throughout the surgical procedure to ensure that no foreign objects areretainedin the surgical wound. Takesappropriate actionif item count is not correct and informs theappropriate staff.

+ Consistently follows safety procedures and protocols for Timeout and when handling sharp instruments, powered equipment, hazardouschemicalsand lasers.

+ Performs high-level disinfection using established policies and procedures asrequired.

What qualifications you will need:

Education:

+ High School graduate or GED equivalentrequired.

+ Graduate of asurgicaltechnologistprogramORhires prior to 9/1/2009 may substitute with1-yearexperience in ahospital setting as a surgical technologist.

Experience:Nonerequired(unless used in lieu of education asstatedabove).

MinimumLicense, Certificates, or Registrations Required:

Per Texas HB 643, surgical technologistsenteringpractice after09/01/2009 must have andmaintain surgical technologist certification.Individuals that performed in a surgical technologist position prior to 09/01/2009 are not required to obtain a surgical technologist certification.

1. CERTIFIED:Must have andmaintainONEof the following:

1. CST–Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board for Surgical Technologyand SurgicalAssisting (NBSTSA)(formally the Liaison Council on Certification for the SurgicalTechnologist)OR

1. TS-C-Tech in Surgery, Certified through the National Center for Competency Testing(NCCT)

+ Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
