    Position Summary

    Functions as a mid-level healthcare provider who, working under the delegated authority of the supervising physician, serves as a physician extender. The role and responsibilities extend beyond those of the Diagnostic Sonographer and are focused on providing advanced clinical sonography services. Functions are performed consistent with incumbent's education and training, and in accordance with the practice's policies and procedures and applicable professional standards.

    Job Responsibilities

    + Performs advanced sonography services or other tasks (e.g., PICC line, interventional procedures, etc.) delegated by the supervising physician, consistent with education, training and practice protocols, policies and procedures.

    + Provides technical, image quality and accuracy oversight for the assessment of sonography examinations.

    + Provides re-scanning support to diagnostic sonographers, when appropriate.

    + Provides recommendations on improvements to workflows and patient care services.

    + Serves as a representative and advocate with other internal or external members of the health care team.

    + Assists with the orientation and training of new staff. Provides education and training to sonographers in the utilization of new equipment features/benefits and scanning techniques.

    + Provides oversight of the system management for the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

    + Functions in full capacity as diagnostic sonographer, fullfilling associated patient-care responsibilities.

    + Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) and practice policies and procedures.

    + Assists with daily operations. Performs quality control procedures to ensure that ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels. Performs preventative maintenance and initiates calls for equipment service as necessary.

    + Ensures that sonography examination results meet practice standards for Quality Assurance before findings are released for interpretation.

    + Works with appropriate staff to ensure quality patient care. Carries out Quality Assurance protocols and Quality Improvement measures within the practice.

    + Assists with the education and training of sonography students and physician residents.

    Education

    + Associate's Degree

    Experience

    + Extensive sonography education, training and experience in the specialty area(s) to be performed.

    + A minimum of five years academic hospital based experience.

    + Completion of a two-year Allied Health degree and successful completion of a 12-month CAAHEP approved program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or equivalent education.

    + Extensive clinical experience in providing sonography services and demonstrated ability to mentor and support staff sonographers.

    + *For posiitons within echocardiography, prospective candidates must demonstrate successful completion of at least 2 registries with 100% competency and independent performance of all exams in those specialty areas performed in the laboratory. BLS certification, issued by the American Heart Association, is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    + Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere with other members of the healthcare team.

    + Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs used for documentation activities and report generation.

    Licenses and Certifications

    + State sonographer licensure, where applicable.

    + Sonographer certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), and/or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

    + Where available, advanced sonographer certification should be acquired.

    Working Conditions/Physical Demands

    + Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.

    + Must be able to move 350 pound wheeled equipment as needed.

    + Ability to travel to various work locations and work variable shifts as needed.
