Position Summary:
Family Peer Advocates (FPAs) are parents or primary caregivers who have raised, or are currently raising, a child with social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. Through their lived experience, FPAs offer authentic peer support, validation, and practical guidance to families navigating similar challenges.
Using their firsthand knowledge of community systems, services, and resources, FPAs build trusting relationships with caregivers, empowering them to become effective advocates for their children. FPAs support families through structured activities that promote engagement, resilience, and growth—strengthening the family unit and helping caregivers build safe, stable, and supportive home environments.
By offering a unique and personal understanding of the journey, Family Peer Advocates foster hope, connection, and meaningful progress toward the family's identified goals.
Essential Accountabilities - Operational Responsibilities
+ Deliver structured activities that enhance a child's ability to function within the family unit and support the family's ability to care for the child in home and community settings.
+ Strengthen and support the caregiving efforts of families, with focused attention on emotional wellness, physical health, parenting practices, and family dynamics.
+ Empower families to make informed decisions by helping them understand available services, supports, and resources—and how to access them within their communities.
+ Build each family's capacity to participate meaningfully in decisions regarding services and supports for both themselves and their child.
+ Support families in improving the overall health and well-being of the child and the family system.
+ Promote strong communication and collaboration between the family and their provider team.
+ Enhance the family's skills and self-confidence to advocate effectively, engage collaboratively with providers, and gradually develop greater independence.
+ Demonstrate working knowledge of childhood psychiatric and behavioral health disorders.
+ Provide culturally competent, family-driven, youth-guided, strength-based, and trauma-informed support.
+ Collaborate closely with team members across Health Homes, CFTSS, and HCBS programs.
+ Document all visits and calls in AVATAR within 24 hours, aligning documentation with CFTSS Treatment Plans and HCBS Service Plan goals.
+ Maintain an up-to-date and accurate scheduling calendar in AVATAR, including scheduled, canceled, and rescheduled sessions.
+ Develop and regularly update FPSS and CFSS goals in accordance with the child’s Treatment or Service Plan. a. The need for FPSS must be recommended by a licensed practitioner and integrated into the CFTSS Treatment Plan.
+ Collaborate with CFTSS and HCBS providers to ensure FPSS and CFSS services are integrated into a unified and coordinated plan.
+ Develop, organize, and lead parent support groups.
+ Complete the FANS Assessment with the parent/guardian and use the results to inform FPSS and CFSS goals.
+ Comply with all applicable CFTSS/HCBS policies, procedures, regulations, and guidance.
+ Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
+ Track and submit all documentation and paperwork by assigned deadlines.
+ Identify and report suspected or confirmed cases of child abuse in accordance with mandated reporting laws.
Administrative & Additional Responsibilities21. Schedule client visits and monitor weekly direct service unit (DSU) expectations.22. Maintain a minimum of 50% direct service units per billing period.23. Submit weekly schedule to supervisor and notify of any changes as they occur.24. Accurately record work hours in Paycom.25. Track and submit mileage for reimbursement, as appropriate.26. Participate in divisional trainings, staff events, and program meetings.27. Attend external trainings, conferences, and OMH/PEP trainings, as required.28. Provide transportation for youth as needed, using agency or personal vehicle.29. Maintain access to a reliable personal vehicle during work hours.30. Submit proof of auto insurance prior to expiration.31. Follow agency safety protocols at all times.32. Obtain and maintain the Family Peer Advocate Credential.33. Attend and actively participate in the Family Bonds Retreat Weekend.34. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
+ Minimum of some high school education; a high school diploma or GED is preferred
+ Must be at least 18 years of age
+ Must Have Valid NYS Driver's License
+ Must have reliable transportation with an insured personal vehicle
+ Experience working with children is required; preference given to those with experience supporting children with special needs
+ Must be a parent or caregiver of a child with a history of emotional or behavioral challenges. A caregiver is defined as a parent, foster parent, or relative with direct responsibility for a child diagnosed with an emotional disturbance
