    Job Description

    THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

     

    ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    + A High School Diploma or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

    Experience

    _Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements._

     

    + **Levels D**

    + Two (2) years as a Paint/Body Mechanic, or related experience

    + **Levels C**

    + Three (3) years Paint/Body Mechanic, or related experience

    + **Level B**

    + Four (4) years as a Paint/Body Mechanic, or related experience

    + **Levels A**

    + Five (5) years as a Paint/Body Mechanic, or related experience

    + **Levels AA**

    + Six (6) years as a of Paint/Body Mechanic, or related experience

    + **Level AA Lead**

    + Six (6) years as a Paint/Body Mechanic, or related experience

    Certification/Licensure

    + Satisfactorily pass all required Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and WMATA certification tests

     

    Valid Class B Commercial Drivers (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper endorsements.

Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

    Job Summary

    The Heavy Overhaul Shop Paint Body Mechanic is a skilled technical vehicle maintenance worker responsible for performing routine to complex accident, body repair, and painting and finishing work which includes but is not limited to, panel replacement, body alignment, straightening, filling, application of decals and preparation for paint on the Authority's vehicles. Duties are performed in accordance with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operating practices and safety rules.

     

    **_Job Levels_** _: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description_

    **_¿AA Lead¿ Level_** _: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required._

    Essential Functions

    + Performs flame cutting, ARC or GAS, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding operations, brazing and soldering vehicle repairs

    + Paints and finishes interior/exterior of buses and vehicles to maintain the aesthetic appearance and ensure safe operating condition of the vehicles.

    + Removes upholstery, accessories, electrical components and trim to gain access to vehicles¿ bodies and fenders.

    + Performs both minor and major repairs by disassembly and rebuilding various types of accident damage to maintain the aesthetic appearance and safe operation of the vehicle.

    + Inspects repaired vehicles for proper functioning, completion of work, dimensional accuracy, and overall appearance of paint job, and test drives vehicles to ensure proper alignment and handling.

    Other Functions

    + Prepares written materials to include but not limited to: repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warranty claims, to document activities, provide written references and meet mandated requirements.

    + Responds to road calls regarding disable buses to perform emergency repair work in the field.

    + _AA Lead level_ - Ensures all work assignments of a group or team are properly completed in compliance within established guidelines and oversees mechanics and other assigned personnel in the absence of the Shift Supervisor.
