    Thompson Engineering is searching for a Field Technician to join our team in Mobile, AL. In this role, you'll be on the front lines of our engineering projects, collecting and documenting crucial subsurface data directly from the field. Working alongside our drilling team, you'll help evaluate soil and rock conditions with precision, and your detailed observations and reporting will directly contribute to the success of major construction, environmental, and infrastructure projects.

    Key Responsibilities

    + Site Assessment & Testing: Perform field tests such as Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests, Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs), Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs), and hand augering to assess soil conditions.

    + Sample Collection & Logging: Collect, classify, and log soil and rock samples using industry standards (e.g., USCS), noting key characteristics like color, texture, and moisture content.

    + Documentation: Keep accurate daily field logs, documenting drilling progress, equipment usage, weather, and any unusual conditions.

    + Safety Compliance: Participate in job-site safety briefings and strictly adhere to all safety protocols.

    + Equipment Maintenance: Assist in setup, breakdown, and routine maintenance of drilling rigs, vehicles, and other field equipment.

    + Team Collaboration: Work closely with drillers and project managers to ensure accurate data collection and timely project execution.

     

    Qualifications & Requirements

     

    + Experience: Previous experience as a geotechnical technician, driller's helper, or similar field-based role preferred.

    + Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with soil and rock classification systems (USCS or similar) is a plus.

    + Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and stand for extended periods.

    + Licensing: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.

    + Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or a degree in geology, environmental science, or civil engineering is a plus.
