Job Summary

The School of Psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for two full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor positions beginning August 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic scientist-practitioner, Clinical Psychology training program in the School of Psychology, including an APA-accredited doctoral training program and an undergraduate psychology major. The Clinical Psychology program emphasizes research mentorship and training in evidence-based practices. We offer training concentrations in child and adult clinical psychology. Research and applied interests are open; we are interested in considering applicants who can contribute to either adult or child concentrations. Our faculty have established records of scholarship in neurodevelopmental disorders, clinical health psychology, alcohol and other drug use, mental health disparities, trauma and adversity, neuropsychologicalassessment, measurement development, and child/adolescent externalizing behavior. Doctoral students provide psychological services through the Center for Behavioral Health (CBH), which is an integrated in-house training clinic staffed by students and faculty from the School, Counseling, and Clinical Psychology training programs. The CBH serves all clientele from the community including assessment and treatment and allows for close supervision of student clinicians by program faculty. Student clinicians also receive supervised experience serving community clients in a range of external practicum placements (e.g., acute inpatient unit, VA hospitals, medical centers, serious mental illness specialty program, juvenile justice, child advocacy center, schools, private practice). We hope to recruit applicants interested in providing clinical supervision of practicum students in our in-house training clinic, as well as mentoring graduate student research. Though Mississippi does not require postdoctoral hours, opportunities for peer supervision during the licensure process (including mentorship, professional development) are available from licensed faculty. Additional research mentoring provides support through the tenure and promotion process. Visa support for international applicants is not available.

The Clinical Psychology program is one of four doctoral programs in the School of Psychology. The School of Psychology has approximately 600 undergraduate majors and 125 graduate students across three APA-accredited doctoral programs (Counseling, Clinical, & School), a doctoral program in Experimental Psychology and an MPCAC-accredited Master’s program in Counseling Psychology. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

+ Develop and maintain a robust program of research.

+ Teach undergraduate and graduate classes including graduate level practicum courses involving the clinical supervision of students in our in-house training clinic.

+ Obtain licensure in the state of Mississippi (note that MS does not require postdoctoral hours).

+ Seek extramural funding.

+ Contribute to the mission of the university and profession through service activities.

+ Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or related fields (by August 2026) and completion of an APA-accredited predoctoral internship.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure as a psychologist in the State of Mississippi.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

+ Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

+ Proven track record of innovative teaching practices and the ability to teach effectively at the university level in an undergraduate and graduate psychology program.

+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from all backgrounds, programs, and colleges.

+ Knowledge of the field of Psychology and associated research methodologies, teaching, and scholarly tools.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated record of, or potential for, conducting research, obtaining extramural funding, and high-quality teaching and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
