The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Recreation Coordinator at our Nampa facility.
This position is responsible for running recreation, physical education, and outdoor programs for incarcerated youth. If you are interested in a challenging and rewarding career making a difference in the lives of youth, we want you to become part of our team!
RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Plan, organize, and direct a recreational program for juveniles in a correctional facility.
+ Define and implement program goals and priorities.
+ Identify juvenile recreation and sports interests and plan for equipment, facility, and personnel needs.
+ Plan and schedule intramural and varsity sports programs (e.g., basketball, softball, soccer, and volleyball).
+ Develop and implement physical fitness training programs.
+ Perform and instruct juveniles in outdoor recreational activities.
+ Supervise juvenile conduct during programs and events.
+ Perform security and protection functions in the recreation area and ensure security procedures are followed.
+ Develop and coordinate community service events.
+ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Good knowledge of major adult sports and related rules and equipment requirements; physical fitness and conditioning.
+ Some knowledge of current first aid practices.
+ Experience assessing recreational needs of adults or juveniles; developing and supervising multifaceted sports and recreation programs; getting participants involved in sports activities and training them in the rules and use of equipment associated with various sports.
+ Good knowledge of techniques, procedures, and safety factors and hazards used in various outdoor recreational activities.
+ Willing to work in a juvenile corrections facility, deal with violence, harassment, threats, verbal abuse; break up fights, control disturbances, and physically restrain offenders; perform searches for contraband and weapons; work alone unarmed among unrestricted offenders; work in secure/locked facility in confined spaces; learn and follow department policies, procedures, rules, and instructions; set aside personal prejudices and be fair; work in high-stress, hostile environments; transport juveniles, become certified in CPR.
+ Physical requirements: no hearing, sight, or physical limitations that would prevent performance of duties.
+ Meet entrance requirements established by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy for correction officers including the following:
+ Be at least 21 years of age
+ Be eligible for and in good standing to obtain POST certification within 12 months of hire
+ Possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
+ For those who served in the military- must have a discharge indicating honorable, uncharacterized, or general under honorable conditions.
+ Hold a current and valid driver’s license in your state of residence
+ Be a U.S. Citizen with no conviction, withheld judgement, suspicion or imposed conviction of the following: (See POST IDAPA Code 11.11.01 for more information)
+ A felony age eighteen (18) years or older at the time of conviction
+ A misdemeanor DUI within the last 2 years or had 2 or more misdemeanor DUI within the last 2 years or had 2 or more misdemeanor DUI offenses within the last 5 years immediately preceding application.
+ A misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence within the last 5 years preceding this application.
+ A misdemeanor crime of deceit or a misdemeanor sex offense within the last 5 years preceding this application.
+ A misdemeanor drug-related offense within one (1) year immediately preceding this application.
+ No purchase, possession, or use of marijuana, cannabis, hashish, hash oil, or THC in synthetic and natural forms marijuana within one (1) year immediately preceding job application.
+ Meet Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Juvenile Facility Standards and must never have been the subject of the following:
+ Been the perpetrator of sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution.
+ Been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
+ Been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
+ Had allegations substantiated against you for an incident(s) of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and/or child abuse against another person.
+ Resigned from a job where I was the subject of a pending investigation being conducted for an allegation of sexual abuse against another person.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Good knowledge of individual and group behavior of youth, intervention and group facilitation methods.
+ Experience instilling values and motivating youth in learning positive life skills and recognizing when youth are being harassed, bullied or abused by others.
+ Experience coordinating community service activities with a variety of stakeholders.· Good knowledge of maintenance and inventory practices related to outdoor recreation and camping equipment.
+ Experience in preparing written reports.
