General Description
The NOAA Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies (NOAA CESSRST) has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist position to coordinate a comprehensive research program to support NOAA’s coastal and ocean science. The research scientist will organize targeted training, workshops, and outreach events that connect academic and private sector partners. Through specialized training modules, faculty and students will develop expertise in accessing NOAA Technology Partnership Office funding, applying business principles to ocean sciences, building industry relationships, and assessing community service needs. This integrated approach ensures participants gain both technical and practical skills necessary for effective technology transfer and community service. The research will primarily:
+ Enhances interdisciplinary training in environmental monitoring by integrating remote sensing, in-situ methods, and citizen science applications.
+ Strengthens technology transfer and commercialization skills to develop innovative coastal science professionals.
+ Fosters robust public-private collaborations to build sustainable networks for addressing critical coastal challenges.
+ Prepares a skilled, future-ready workforce through hands-on experience in applying research advancements to real-world coastal environmental issues.
+ Improving user data access and data management for earth systems and remote sensing
Other Duties
+ Conducts research in connection with CESSRST programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others
+ Developing research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding
+ Writing progress reports; and publishing findings
+ Collaborating with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders
+ Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Doctoral Degree in related science or engineering disciplines with at least two years of research experience relevant to NOAA’s Coastal Ocean Sciences. Potential candidates should have experience with stakeholder engagement and citizen science, as well as a proven ability to produce reports independently and manage stakeholder communications while maintaining strong relationships with colleagues and staff. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a track record of conducting research in their field, combined with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Organizational skills and the capability to work effectively in teams are essential. Experinece in working across institutions a plus.

These functions include legal assessment and signing of agreements where RFCUNY is named as a fiscal agent; setting up award accounts; preparing sub-awards and assisting PIs in monitoring the work of the recipients of sub-awards; supporting project directors with hiring and managing research project and sponsored program staff; supporting the purchasing and paying for goods and services with grant and program funds; managing financial aspects of projects including accounts receivable, financial reporting, invoicing, budget monitoring, and cost compliance with uniform guidance; ensuring that sponsor financial requirements are met; monitoring compliance with applicable project and financial management rules and laws; supporting the management of independent and external audits and financial reviews; and providing data, information, management expertise, and other supports to CUNY’s research and sponsored programs.
