    Description of Work Unit

    Established in 2015, the partnership between CSU Extension and AmeriCorps aims to provide people power to the communities of Colorado. The CSUE AmeriCorps Program is an AmeriCorps State program funded by AmeriCorps through Serve Colorado – The Governor’s Commission on Community Service.     Chaffee County Extension leads programming for seven 4-H clubs in Chaffee and Lake Counties, along with school programming in Salida and Buena Vista and partnerships with other youth organizations from Guidestone Colorado to the Boys & Girls Clubs.

    Position Summary

    A member with 4-H STEM AmeriCorps at Chaffee County Extension will serve as a program activator, building capacity to support increased 4-H STEM programming through clubs, Cloverbuds activities, lessons and programming with partner organizations or schools. The member will provide key program support and represent CSU Extension throughout Chaffee County.

    Term of Service / Time Commitment:

    This is a minimum-time national and community service position requiring, at a minimum, a total of 300 hours during the year (approximately 30 hours/week). The position begins September 8 and ends December 12. Our office is open Monday to Thursday, 7:30-5:30pm, and the member can expect to largely work during those times, though there are some weekend / evening events that they will be asked to join. Here are the predicted weekend / evening events:

     

    + Achievement Banquet, Sunday, September

    + CLC weekend camp

    + Monthly Cloverbuds that run 5-6pm

    Training and Support Provided:

    Members receive significant training and experience in community engagement, project implementation, leadership, working with a variety of populations, and more. Up to 20% (or 60 hours) of total hours served may be spent in applicable approved trainings. Members will be supervised and supported by Monica Pless, Extension County Director, Chaffee County and Rebecca Sheriff, Extension County Specialist, 4-H Youth Development, Chaffee and Lake Counties, as well as by Melinda Macpherson, RamCorps Program Manager,[email protected]. The cohort of members serving throughout the region will act as additional resources and support for each other.

    Location and Service Conditions:

    This position is based at Chaffee County Extension office, 185 Quigot Court, Salida, CO. Position will involve occasional days of service outdoors and/or in a school or community building.

    Program Benefits:

    + A living allowance of approximately $625.71 for (Minimum-time) members per pay period on a bi-weekly cycle for an approximate total of $4,380 for the term of service. Taxes are deducted and the living allowance is distributed by direct deposit to the member.

    + An education award of $1,565.08 earned upon successful completion of term of service.

    + It is possible to temporarily postpone repayment of qualified student loans through forbearance while serving as an AmeriCorps member.

    + Mileage reimbursement for travel to required trainings and days of service

    + Access to ongoing professional development trainings and resources through the university

    + Experience working with professionals in the field with on the ground training

    + While we do not have housing available, our staff are happy to reach out through our networks to help find rentals in Chaffee County.

    + Free attendance at Chaffee County gardening workshops for our Master Gardeners / community, such as the September Forestry Academy.

    Position Minimum Qualifications

    + At least 18 years old at start of service.

    + High school diploma or G.E.D.

    + Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.

    + Able to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (state, FBI , and National Sex Offender Public Website checks) per 45 CFR 2540.202

    + Wear official AmeriCorps identity items such as name tag, T-shirts, and lapel pins during all AmeriCorps service.

    + Be willing to provide direct services, strengthen the community or build the capacity of the organization as described in the position description.

    + Ability to work respectfully with a variety of different populations.

    + Excellent organizational and time management skills.

    + Computer skills: familiarity with MS Office 365, especially Outlook and SharePoint, and Zoom.

    + Ability to serve independently with minimal supervision.

    + Ability to learn and retain complex information with accuracy and to follow procedures consistently and with attention to detail.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Be dedicated to community service.

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    + Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in extreme weather conditions.

    + We welcome applicants with a background in youth development, or experience in gardening, robotics, cooking or livestock.
