    - This position will travel to the West Burlington campus daily.

    Job Description:

    A Brief OverviewThe Recreational Therapist is responsible for planning and directing the activity program. Group and Individual activities will be designed to encourage restoration to self-care and maintenance of normal activity, which is geared to the individual client's needs, and interests. The Recreational Therapist will provide programs related to physical activities, cognitive stimulation/intellectual/educational activities, spiritual/religious activities, service activities, sensory stimulation, community activities, expressive and creative activities, family involvement and social activity. The Recreational Therapist will participate in multidisciplinary conferences, as requested, conduct an activity (leisure) assessment of each patient on admission, report verbally and through written report/progress notes in the patient's chart and to the team members during conference.What you will do

    + Interacts as a team with the providers, department staff, and the patients and their families to develop a recreation program that is geared to the individual patient’s needs and interests. Must have the ability to work with a variety of patient of all populations (e.g., developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patients with congestive heart failure).

    + Assists to maintain therapeutic milieu.

    + Provides recreational activities for patients.

    + Provides and buys supplies within budget constraints for all activities.

    + Maintains an activity calendar.

    + Fills out appropriate forms for Compliance with Iowa Department of Public Health, including MDS.

    + Holds group activities as well as one to one activities.

    + Requests suggestions and accepts constructive criticisms; utilizes these criticisms in a positive way.

    + Observes patient confidentiality by not discussing patient issues except on a need-to-know basis and not looking up information in computer or charts.

    + Attends mandatory in-services.

    + Participates in education and training that is specific to the patient population served (e.g., developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patient with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patients with congestive heart failure).

    + Monitors for safety of patients and maintains boundaries during activity or any patient interaction time.

    + Demonstrates understanding of patient rights and the Iowa Mental Health Code.

    + Provides information to the assigned RN regarding patient care delivered.

    + Communicates significant changes to appropriate healthcare team.

    + Involves designated resource person(s) when performing unfamiliar tasks or procedures and utilizes the RN directing care which he/she reports to.

    + Completes activity assessments on all patients.

    Qualifications:

    Qualifications

    + Associate’s Degree (AA) associates degree from an accredited college as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Recreation Therapist or Music Therapist Required or

    + Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Recreation Therapist or Music Therapist Preferred

    + knowledgeable in the IDPH regulations for Activities, Quality of Life and able to complete the activities portion of the MDS.

    + Verbal ability to communicate with the multidisciplinary team regarding the care of the resident, and to conduct the Activities Program.

    + Numerical ability is needed to order supplies, and monitor budget for Activity supplies.

    + Clerical perception is needed for completing assessments.

    + Finger dexterity is needed for, but not limited to completing of craft projects.

    + The ability to accept directions and follow through with a plan of care.

    + The ability to adapt and prioritize during emergency situations.

    + Ability to work with a variety of patients.

    + Mental and Emotional requirements: Manage stress appropriately, make decision under pressure, manage anger/fear/hostility/violence of other appropriately, handle multiple priorities and work alone.

    + Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g., developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patients with congestive heart failure).
