The College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University invites applications at the rank of **Assistant Professor in the Department of** **Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies as part of the Native American and** **Indigenous Studies (NAIS) Initiative.** The appointment will be housed within WGSS, with courses and service expected to help grow the interdepartmental NAIS Initiative, which includes an undergraduate minor. The NAIS Initiative engages with the global, transdisciplinary scope of Indigenous studies, scholarship spanning Turtle Island and Abiayala (the Americas), and has a thematic emphasis on gender, feminism, and/or environmental sustainability and justice. We are especially looking for faculty who can develop and teach core courses for the NAIS minor, and who can connect Indigenous methodologies to histories of Indigenous resistance, resilience, and decolonization. **This position will have an expectation of working with** **local/regional Indigenous communities through outreach efforts, and will** **begin in the fall 2026 semester.**
The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the humanities or social sciences specializing in Indigenous feminisms with expertise on gender/sexual violence and/or climate/environmental justice; a demonstrated record of excellence in research, teaching, and service in NAIS & WGSS; and engagement with local and regional Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester, including graduate (PhD) seminars, and core curricular and topic courses for the undergraduate programs in WGSS and NAIS.
The positions will remain open until filled, **with priority consideration** **for applications submitted by October 31, 2025.**
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in NAIS, WGSS, or related field, with extensive training/experience in NAIS, by September 2025.Disciplinary specialization appropriate to NAIS and WGSS. Evidence of the ability to conduct and publish scholarly research related to NAIS and WGSS. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in education.
Preferred Qualifications:
Record of peer-reviewed publications or activities. Post-secondary teaching experience related to NAIS or WGSS. Evidence of outreach and engagement with off-campus communities. Experience with professional organizations in NAIS, such as NAISA or the American Indian Studies Association. Demonstrated interest in securing external research/exhibition funding, or public facing scholarship in relevant areas. Mentoring experience (informal or formal) or training.
