    Description

    *This position qualifies for our UNC Health Wayne Incentive Program, which includes up to $10,000 commitment incentive.

     

    Cardiac Med Surg Unit is equipped with cutting-edge technology and specializes in the comprehensive management of cardiac and respiratory conditions. With continuous patient monitoring, the unit caters to individuals with a variety of conditions including low-risk cardiac events, congestive heart failure (CHF), syncope, post-cardiac catheterization (low risk), post-pacemaker implantation (low risk), pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and viral respiratory illnesses. The rooms are all equipped with bedside monitors and wall mounted computers for easy access to electronic charts.

    Summary:

    The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for overseeing clinical activities within a unit or area. Manages key department programs and initiatives for that area. Serves as the direct link between Wayne UNC Health Care leadership and the patient care team. Achieves superior clinical and financial outcomes with a focus on patient, provider and teammate satisfaction. Collaborates with others to achieve the Hospital's strategic mission and objectives.

    Responsibilities:

    1. Establishes departmental goals and priorities which align with the hospital’s strategic direction.

    2. Directs and oversees daily activities and operations of an efficient, coordinated, competent, compassionate and customer focused care team. Ensures assignments and resources are efficiently utilized and distributed.

    3. Supports the SVP/Chief Nursing Officer in the development and promulgation of professional standards of nursing practice for the hospital. Integrates hospital-wide standards into practice.

    4. Develops, maintains and evaluates systems that support the nursing process and the delivery of safe and effective patient care.

    5. Collaborates with providers, leaders and teammates hospital-wide to develop, implement and evaluate care processes and procedures pertinent to the patient populations served.

    6. Serves as a subject matter expert or uses other subject matter experts to provide safe patient care.

    7. Leads efforts to develop and implement evidence-based clinical practice into daily practice.

    8. Coordinates requirements for ongoing and new patient care programs, consistent with available resources.

    9. Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. Continuously monitors service operations and initiates changes as required.

    10. Enhances others understanding of nursing and patient care standards and regulations as integral to and supportive of professional practice.

    11. May participate in evaluating, selecting and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient use of resources.

    12. Develops and monitors budgets and expenses. Makes modifications to meet goals as needed.

    13. Evaluates staffing patterns, patient discharge and/or volume targets. Responds to market and environmental forces as they may impact the delivery of acute care services.

    14. Responsible for the professional development of teammates. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements and monitors staff participation in same.

    15. Keeps up to date on trends and developments in area of practice. Researches, develops and implements new protocols and procedures.

    16. In partnership with the Administrative Director and/or SVP/CNO and Human Resources, makes decisions on teammate hires, corrective actions, terminations, promotions and similar actions. Completes performance appraisals for the unit, completes teammate incident reports, and ensures correction of deficiencies.

    17. Shares in 24-hour responsibility for the unit.

    18. Keeps appropriate leaders updated regarding any issues, concerns or problems.

    19. Promotes a safe, clean environment.

    20. Actively leads or participates in staff meetings and on committees.

    21. Leads and/or participates in performance improvement activities.

    22. Remains calm and works effectively in stressful situations, such as death and dying, census fluctuations, adverse weather, etc. Responds appropriately in emergency situations.

    23. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

    24. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with, and provides recommended care and services to all patients.

    25. Ensures the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical care for patients.

    26. Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

    Other information:

    Education

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.

     

    Licensure/Certification

     

    Current Registered Nurse licensure in North Carolina.

     

    BLS certification required.

     

    Additional certifications may be required for a specific area of practice.

    Experience

    At least five years of progressive nursing experience including two years of management or leadership experience preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • In depth knowledge of nursing practices relevant to area of specialty.

    • In depth knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation.

    • Solid decision making and critical thinking skills.

    • Proven leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others.

    • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

    • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

    • Proficient with EMR and able to learn new software rapidly.

    • Ability to stand, walk and meet the physical requirements of the role.

     

    Valid NC Driver’s License: No

     

    If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
