    Overview

     

    Tanaq Management Services (TMS) delivers professional, scientific, and technical services and information technology (IT) solutions to federal agencies in the health, agriculture, technology, and other government services.     About the Role

     

    We are seeking a **Veterinary Technician** to provide technical support in laboratory animal care, surgery, and clinical operations at our federal customer’s facility. This role will assist veterinarians with procedures, provide direct care to animal colonies, and ensure compliance with established welfare and safety standards. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to maintaining the highest standards in animal welfare practices.

     

    This is an entirely onsite position at our customer's location in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is contingent on contract award.

    Responsibilities

    + Assist in examinations, surgeries and procedures: anesthesia monitoring, surgical prep, and recovery care. Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment.

    + Perform endotracheal tube insertion and gavage techniques.

    + Clean, debride, and suture superficial wounds at the Veterinarian’s direction.

    + Place IV catheters using aseptic technique and maintain them appropriately.

    + Collect, preserve, prepare and document biological samples such as tissue, blood, urine, feces, skin scrapings, tagging and tailing.

    + Provide treatments, inoculations, and preventive care.

    + Calculate doses and administer drugs (IV, IM, SQ, IP, ID, PO) as directed by the Veterinarian.

    + Operate and maintain medical equipment such as mechanical ventilators, anesthesia machines, ECG, x-ray, capnography, perform embryo transfer or related activities, etc.

    + Maintain surgical and necropsy schedule and necropsy rooms in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

    + Maintain medical records accurately and file all records as directed.

    + Maintain controlled substances and log. Check log monthly and report any problems within 24 hours.

    + Maintain inventory of all drugs and medical supplies, keeping all areas properly stocked at all times.

    + Support daily husbandry operations and health surveillance programs.

    + Perform daily animal health checks and report signs of abnormal or poor animal health to the Veterinarian, supervisor and customer immediately.

    + Communicate regularly with the Veterinarian and/or designee regarding management of active medical cases including, but not limited to, medical procedures, nutrition, training, and behavioral enrichment.

    + Collaborate closely with the veterinarian and/or designee to ensure that clinical support and technical duties are carried out according to prescribed plans and SOPs.

    + Perform humane euthanasia as directed.

    + Collect post-mortem specimens for shipment and evaluation.

    + Receive animals, handle and restrain, conduct health surveillance, equipment maintenance, supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties.

    + Understand and follow appropriate SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines.

    + Provide information as needed to complete contract deliverables.

    + Work flexible hours as needed to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines to include weekend and holiday coverage.

    + Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Required Experience and Skills

    + Minimum 2 years of experience in animal care, laboratory medicine or biomedical research required.

    + Minimum 3 years of experience as a technologist desired.

    + Experience in specialty areas such as rodent, small and/or large animal, regulated species, and non-human primate facilities management and technical procedures, breeding, and/or barrier management in a biomedical research facility preferred.

    + Capable of performing basic animal care duties, basic veterinary care responsibilities (e.g., observations and treatments).

    + Fundamental knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and normal behavior of the animals.

    + Working knowledge of biohazard containment at the ABSL-3 level or higher highly desired. Must be comfortable working in biocontainment facilities.

    + Be able to don and doff the required Personal Protective Equipment.

    + Possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

    + Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and standard procedures.

    + Ability to work independently and within a team.

    + Ability to identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions according to guidelines.

    + Ability to follow safety procedures and ensure standard policies and practices are followed.

    + Ability to obtain government clearance.

    + Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

    + Must be able to wear a respirator.

    + Will be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

    Education and Training

    + High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.

    + Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, animal science, biology or related field highly desired.

    + Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT or LATG) strongly preferred or ability to obtain certification within 1 year.

    + State certification as a Veterinary Technician desirable.

    Physical Requirements

    + Ability to work flexible hours to ensure animal care and experiments are carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines to include weekend and holiday coverage.

    + Ability to lift up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) frequently.

    + Strength and agility to capture, restrain, and carry medium-sized mammals without causing harm to the animal or self.

    + Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals.

    + Walking, reaching, bending, and stooping.

    + May be exposed to Hazardous materials and will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.

    + Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement, including Hepatitis B, among others.

    + Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing required.

    + Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.
