    Hamilton College (Clinton, NY)

    Apply Now

The Literature and Creative Writing Department at Hamilton College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026, to teach Indigenous American literatures and cultures. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise across multiple media. We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate their experience in teaching or working with broadly diverse student populations while contributing to a vibrant learning community that values academic freedom, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. Your cover letter should address the ways in which you would enhance the educational experience of students and further the College’s educational goals (https://hamilton.smartcatalogiq.com/current/college-catalogue/educational-goals-and-curriculum/) .

The Literature and Creative Writing Department offers innovative concentrations and minors in creative writing and literatures composed in or translated into English, across temporal and geographical categories. The department, one of the College’s largest, consists of 14 tenured and pre-tenure faculty, who teach and do scholarly and creative work in a wide variety of genres, fields, and forms. We take a broad, intermedial view of literary and cultural inquiry; many of us pursue comparative and interdisciplinary work—engaging, for example, book history, critical media studies, philosophy and intellectual history, sound studies, translation studies, or visual culture studies—from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Because we are a department that both studies and creates literature, we require students within both majors to do work in creative practice as well as literary and cultural analysis. More information about the department, its faculty, and programs can be found at this link (https://hamilton.smartcatalogiq.com/current/college-catalogue/academicprograms/literature-and-creative-writing/literature-and-creative-writing-overview/) . We anticipate that our new colleague will contribute to Hamilton’s Program in American Indian and Indigenous Studies (https://www.hamilton.edu/academics/departments/american-indian-and-indigenous-studies#:~:text=The%20American%20Indian%20and%20Indigenous,and%20knowledge%20across%20the%20curriculum.) .

Candidates with ABD in English, Comparative Literature, or Indigenous Studies will be considered, although candidates with a Ph.D. are preferred. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the first year and five courses thereafter. The position requires institutional service including academic advising of undergraduate students after the first year. The expected 9-month base salary range for this position is $92,100 to $97,900. Candidates should submit a cover letter, c.v., writing sample (20-25 pages), and contact information for three professional references via interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/172915.

Questions regarding the search may be directed to Onno Oerlemans , Search Committee Chair, at [email protected]. Our review of candidates will begin on Oct 1st; applications will be accepted until Oct 10th.
