NATURE OF WORK:

The Classroom Assistant will assist the Teacher daily in classroom operations. In addition, the Classroom Assistant will help in maintaining an orderly learning environment. The Classroom Assistant must at all times maintain confidentiality of information regarding personnel, families, children and program matters.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS

The Classroom Assistant will serve as assistant to the Teacher and Assistant Teacher and work cooperatively with all Center staff as well as with individual classroom staff which will include other students, volunteers, and substitutes. The Classroom Assistant is a vital member of the team and is expected to work in harmony with other staff as well as with parents.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CLASSROOM ASSISTANT SHALL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

CLASSROOM

+ Assists in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for children.

+ Is aware of and alert to any situation which might indicate a concern for child abuse or neglect and report any such situation to the Teacher.

+ Shares in routine performance of daily tasks required in the care of young children.

+ Works in all areas of the classroom with individual children and with small or large groups of children. (May supervise a small group of children at opening and closing.)

+ Assists in assuring the safe use of classroom and playground equipment.

+ Assists with cleaning and storage of materials and assures that materials are used appropriately.

+ Assists in the routine housekeeping tasks of the classroom as requested.

+ Shares any information about children, program, etc. (should be communicated with Teacher of the program.)

PARENT RELATIONSHIP

+ Helps parent and others feel welcome in the classroom at all times.

2. Directs parents to Teacher or Assistant Teacher for information about child or incident.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Works to ensure an atmosphere of goodwill, openness and sharing in the classroom.

+ Carries out all other duties as assigned by the Teacher, Assistant Teacher, or Director

+ Able and willing to participate in children's activities sitting on the floor or child-size chairs

+ Appearance is neat and appropriate for working with given age group.

+ Ability to work with others cooperatively and as a team.

+ Notifies Teacher/Director of personal absences and requests days off in a timely fashion.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

+ Participates in staff development trainings.

Classroom Assistants must indicate a willingness to accept additional responsibilities or a change in position description if necessary

Job Requirements:

+ High school diploma or equivalent or substantial experience in day care, early childhood, or related program.

+ Experience and interest in working with infant, toddler, and/or preschool (parent experience acceptable.)

Additional Information:

+ Salary: $16.37/hr @ 37.5 hours/week

+ Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday

+ Reports to: Teacher/Center Manager/Director
