DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is skilled work involving responsibility for the complete overhaul and repair of a wide variety of automotive equipment including heavy duty equipment such as bulldozers and buses. The work requires a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment. Does related work as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PESONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; thorough knowledge of standard school bus repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trades when appointed at school districts; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to school buses and other mechanical equipment when appointed at school districts; familiarity with welding techniques; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; good physical condition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either:
+ One (1) year of experience as a Mechanic I; OR
+ Two (2) years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, which shall have involved repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment; OR
+ A satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of A and B above.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession, at time of appointment and during service in this classification, of a valid NYS Motor Vehicle Operator's license appropriate for the type of vehicles which the employee may from time to time operate. Valid NYS Class B CDL license with "P" and "S" endorsements within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner, and during service in this class; Appointee must be at least 21 years of age, meet civil service requirements and complete a pre-employment three hour safety training program required by the New York State Department of Education; Complete thirty hours of basic school bus driver training program within first year, as well as other training; Appointment is temporary until fingerprinting is approved by New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
School bus mechanical experience preferred.
