    Summary The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. We protect and secure Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure and open environment. Responsibilities Serves as Communications Dispatcher in the Communications Section (COMM), Command Division, Command and Coordination Bureau, Office of the Assistant Chief of Police for Uniformed Operations, United States Capitol Police (USCP). COMM is responsible for facilitating service calls and information using telecommunications equipment and automated systems to resolve a variety of issues and to ensure a response from the appropriate emergency service. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: * Answers, evaluates, and prioritizes incoming telephone calls to determine urgency and the need for dispatching police, fire, medical and other emergency services. * Disseminates emergency information to the USCP and the Congressional community by using a Computer-Aided Dispatch system, telephones, multi-channel radios, telecommunication device for the deaf, numerous law enforcement and agency databases and automated map systems. * Monitors alarms and manages control and video security systems. * Operates and monitors intrusion detection, access control, Member duress calls, digital videos, closed-circuit television, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance assessments. * Accesses databases for information, warrant checks, intelligence and driver's license and vehicle registration checks. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a current USCP sworn employee below the rank of Sergeant and have attained the rank of Private with Training. Must have successfully completed your probationary period by the closing date of this announcement. Must possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver's license. Must successfully complete all required training. Qualifications 1. Must be a USCP sworn employee below the rank of Sergeant; have successfully completed your probationary period; and have attained the rank of Private with Training by the closing date of this announcement. 2. Must not be in restricted leave status as of the date of selection. 3. Must be in full and unrestricted duty status to attend, participate, and successfully complete all required training courses related to this position as of the date of selection unless otherwise authorized by law (e.g., performance of duty injury, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), or Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)). 4. Must be available to work flexible hours, rotating shifts, and possible midnight assignments. Education There is no education substitution for experience in this series and/or grade. Additional Information Applications and supporting documentation must be received by the closing date of the announcement to receive consideration. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions. This position is included in a collective bargaining unit. NOTE: More than one selection may be made from this vacancy announcement. The selection list will be active for a period of one (1) year from the date of approval of the selection memorandum. An applicant may request to be removed from consideration by sending a written request to the Office of Human Resources. RETENTION CRITERIA: 1. Successful completion of the 18-week Communication Operators Training Program which includes a one-week Shadow-Phase, as well as training in the Washington Area Law Enforcement System (WALES) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) central database. 2. Must maintain all associated required certifications, including national certifications by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials, WALES and NCIC. 3. Must maintain proficiency with radio and computer equipment, as well as security systems and related databases.
