TENTATIVE EXAMINATION DATE: September 25, 2025 - September 29, 2025 (Examination will be online).
The City of Stockton's Administrative Services Department is currently looking to fill one vacancy for a Customer Service Assistant to work in the Department's Revenue Division. This position will provide customer service support to City departments by assisting the public with inquiries, processing payments, and maintaining accurate account records. Duties include performing field activities such as meter reading, utility service connections, inspections for code compliance, and delivering City documents. The role also involves maintaining tools, vehicles, and equipment, as well as preparing reports and public information materials.
The successful candidate will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 7:30am to 5:30pm Mondays through Thursdays; 8:00am to 5:00pm Fridays, with alternating Fridays off. May be required to work additional hours and/or weekends to provide operational support.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by Stockton City Employees' Association. (Classified/Represented)
The City of Stockton is currently recruiting for the position of Office Assistant I. This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees , with regular status at time of application, may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list, the open list, or a combination of both. This list may be used to fill future vacancies.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of customer service support, both in the office and in the field where high contact customer relations are performed.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This position is a primary support level to various City customer service activities. The Customer Service Assistant must exercise considerable judgment, problem-solving, and analytical skills to complete a variety of tasks, often in nonroutine situations.

+ Performs customer service related functions for various City departments.
+ Meets and greets the public; provides information to customers regarding City services, fees and charges; responds to specific customer inquiries.
+ May accept and/or process payments from customers.
+ Performs field activities as directed; may deliver or pick up City documents; inspects locations for compliance with the Stockton Municipal Code; reads water meters and turns utility service on/off; installs/removes water meters; researches unauthorized utility connections.
+ Researches and verifies customer accounts and/or payment status; enters pertinent data into customer accounts, such as actions taken and information given.
+ Maintains accurate records and prepares reports and a variety of written materials; enters and retrieves data from an online or personal computer.
+ Organizes and creates displays of merchandise and public information.
+ May drive a City vehicle; inspects, reports and arranges for needed repairs and service on an assigned vehicle.
+ Orders and maintains necessary tools and equipment for fieldwork.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and two years experience in a public contact/customer service environment.
Other Requirements:
+ Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.
+ Must be willing to work out-of-doors in all weather conditions.
+ Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and to perform sustained physical labor.
Knowledge of:
+ Techniques for dealing with customers, often in situations that may be difficult or confrontational;
+ Office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment;
+ Basic math;
+ Operation of computer systems, including personal computers and mainframes;
+ Word processing and spreadsheet software utilized by the City.
Skill in:
+ Prioritizing work and coordinating several activities;
+ Organizing and maintaining accurate records; preparing required documents in a clear, complete, and accurate manner;
+ Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work;
+ Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions;
+ Operating and maintaining basic hand and power tools and equipment;
+ Safely operating a motor vehicle.
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process will include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
