    Overview

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.

Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads critical research in four areas: Atmospheric, Climate & Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Molecular Sciences, and Global Change. Our vision is to develop a predictive understanding of biological and Earth systems in transition. We aim to understand energy and material flows within the integrated Earth system; to understand, predict, and control the response of biosystems to environmental and/or genomic changes; and to model the Earth system from the subsurface to the atmosphere.

The Biological Sciences Division has 17 collaborative, interdisciplinary biology-based teams to tackle major challenges in ecosystem sustainability, bioenergy, human health, and national security. Teams use unique field sites, advanced instrumentation, and integrated computational approaches to explore molecular-scale processes. Strategic efforts focus on advancing molecular measurement capabilities, uncovering the structure and function of molecular dark matter, identifying control points in complex systems, and developing domain-aware AI to accelerate discovery and hypothesis-driven research.

    Responsibilities

This position will support the Multiscale System Science Group’s Strategic Scientific Objective on identifying control points for manipulating multiscale systems. Multiscale System Science Group is seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate with a strong background in the integration of multi-omic data (e.g., metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metametabolomics) with metabolic models in environmental systems (e.g., sediments, soils, surface water) that contain highly diverse microbial communities.

The successful candidate will work with a large team of experimentalists and modelers to integrate omics-based insights into predictive models that couple hydrology, biogeochemistry, and microbial metabolism. The candidate will use existing and new data generated through PNNL’s river corridor science focus area (RCSFA) program ( https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/river-corridor ), the WHONDRS consortium ( https://whondrs.pnnl.gov/ ), and the Genome Resolved Open Watersheds (GROW) database. There will be opportunities to pursue regional, continental, and global scale river corridor studies.

    Responsibilities include:

+ Prepare samples, analyze and interpret multi-omics datasets (e.g., metagenomes, metatranscriptomes, metabolomes) from environmental samples across diverse river corridor settings.

+ Collaborate closely with modeling experts to map omics-derived metabolic functions and pathways onto biogeochemical and process-based models.

+ Conduct comparative and integrative analyses across omics layers and environmental gradients to identify microbial traits and functional potential linked to ecosystem-scale processes.

+ Help design experiments and sampling strategies informed by model predictions and sensitivity analyses.

+ Contribute to public data products (e.g., GROW), ensure compliance with FAIR and AI-ready principles, and support the development of reproducible analysis pipelines.

+ Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

+ Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

    Preferred Qualifications:

+ Ph.D. in microbiology, environmental science, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, or a related discipline.

+ Demonstrated expertise in analyzing multi-omics data from complex environmental systems, with an emphasis on microbial community structure and function.

+ Hands-on experience in preparing and analyzing multi-omics samples.

+ Proficiency with bioinformatics workflows and tools for metagenomic or transcriptomic analysis, and proficiency with cheminformatics workflows for analysis of mass spectrometry data.

+ Experience using scripting languages such as Python or R for data processing, analysis, and visualization.

+ Strong communication skills and a commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary science.

+ Motivation to publish high-quality research and contribute to open science practices.
