The Academic Advisor I is responsible for driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. This position will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors.

Salary Range: Salary is Commensurate (Based on selected hire’s qualifications)

Special Note: Works to cover shifts, or take emergency call, on evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

+ Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

+ No required experience

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Knowledge of student development in higher education

+ Strong computer skills and familiarity with undergraduate curriculum

+ TAMU academic advising experience

+ Ability to lead students in developing education and personal goals

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

+ Initiating, building, and maintaining effective relationships

+ Communicating with others in a clear and concise manner that is audience appropriate

+ Researching information to meet situation parameters

+ Actively listening to determine speakers’ goals, needs, and/or challenges

+ Organizing, prioritizing, and working effectively to meet goals and parameters of simultaneous projects

Responsibilities

+ Provides academic advising for students grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories

+ Advises for course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues

+ Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students

+ Monitors academic progress and implements intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing

+ Promotes student learning, development, and personal growth to empower self-sufficiency. Provides students with proactive referrals to appropriate resources and timely reminders, and other targeted individual and group communications using email, texting, and social media

+ Assist with implementation of retention programs and interventions for all students

+ Applies knowledge of State, University, and college policies and procedures and maintains accurate records of student contacts
