    Job Summary

    Earth Lab is seeking a Temporary Researcher to join an NSF ASCEND Engine-funded project assessing the vulnerability of the built environment to wildfires. This project leverages large datasets, remote sensing products, and advanced analytics to improve the understanding and quantification of wildfire risk to homes and infrastructure.

     

    The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of wildfire science, data science, and infrastructure resilience. Core responsibilities include:

     

    + Integrating diverse datasets (e.g., remote sensing imagery, built environment tabular data, geo-located information).

    + Implementing machine learning and advanced analytic tools.

    + Supporting scientific research and tool development.

     

    This is a 3-month position with the potential for extension depending on funding availability. The role is based in Boulder, Colorado, at Earth Lab, and will be supervised by the Director of Earth Lab.

    Earth Lab

     

    Earth Lab (https://earthlab.colorado.edu/) is part of CIRES and CU-Boulder's Grand Challenge: Our Space, Our Future. Earth Lab's mission is to harness the data revolution using Earth observations from aerospace platforms (drone, aircraft, and space) and other sources (e.g., social media etc.) to better understand the pace and pattern of environmental change. Earth Lab capitalizes on the data deluge from Space to accelerate global environmental change science, reducing environmental risk and surprise by understanding and predicting slow and abrupt Earth system changes, and trains a new generation of data scientists in Earth analytics.

    What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

    + Integrate high-resolution VIIRS, ICS-209, and built-environment datasets.

    + Develop and apply spatial metrics to assess wildfire impacts.

    + Implement machine learning models to support analysis and tool development.

    What You Should Know

    + This appointment is not eligible for vacation leave, holidays, annual merit pay increases, nor employee health, retirement, or related benefits, except those required by law.

    + This appointment will accrue.034 hours of sick leave for every hour worked.

    + This temporary position cannot exceed 12 months.

    What We Require

    + Bachelor's degree in geography, statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field, with experience collaborating in scientific research settings.

    + Strong quantitative skills in statistics and informatics, with experience applying methods to Earth, atmospheric, geoscience, or biological datasets to integrate information across scales.

    + Proficiency in R or Python.

    What You Will Need

    + Knowledge of data processing and manipulation, including formatting, ingestion, cleaning, and documentation.

    + Quantitative skills in applied computer vision and/or machine learning.

    + Background in remote sensing.
