    Position Summary

    Saint John's Abbey invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of Licensed Practical Nurse.

     

    This position is responsible for the nursing care of the monk residents and monks needing short term care in a residential setting. Will have knowledge of general rehabilitative and preventative nursing theory, familiarity with the organization, policies and regulations of the Order of Saint Benedict, Saint John’s Abbey and the Abbey Retirement Center. Works as a member of a team in meeting the resident’s care needs (physical, emotional, social, spiritual, etc.) by assisting in the assessment of the individual’s need, developing an individualized care plan, implementing the plan and evaluating the care given.

     

    Hours: 7am-3pm, rotating holidays, and every other weekend

    The posted wage represents OSB's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

    Responsibilities

    1.Attend resident care conferences, help assess and update care plans.

    2.Set up and give medications, including oral, topical, hypodermic, suppositories, etc.

    3.Applies dressings, takes and records vital signs, gives treatments (enemas, skin and foot care, eye treatments, urine tests, oxygen, etc.) as needed.

    4.Maintains records reflecting the residents’ condition, medications and treatments given.

    5.Monitors the nursing assistants in their carrying out of tasks appropriately assigned to them.

    6.Maintains order and cleanliness in the work area.

    7.Assist in feeding, toileting, bathing and hygiene, and dressing of residents as needed.

    8.Assist in making of beds and maintaining order of residents’ rooms as needed.

    9.Complies with health care directives of dying residents, notifies proper personnel. Assists with care of the body after death and documentation.

    10. May include occasional assistance to monks or others needing immediate nursing attention.

    11.Performs other duties as required by the director or supervisor

    Qualifications

    Education:

    •Graduate of a practical nursing program which qualifies the graduate for LPN licensure in the state of Minnesota.

    •Current Minnesota LPN licensure.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    •Excellent written and oral communication skills

    •Basic computer skills

    •Ability to effectively present information on one-to-one and small group situations to customers, residents and other employees of the organization.

    Physical Abilities:

    Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) require a combination of physical abilities to effectively perform their duties. These abilities enable them to provide quality patient care, respond to emergencies, and work comfortably throughout their shifts. Here's a breakdown of the key physical abilities:

    Strength and Stamina:

    •Lifting and Transferring Patients: LPNs frequently need to lift, move, and reposition patients, sometimes supporting up to 50 pounds or more. This includes assisting patients in and out of bed, wheelchairs, or stretchers.

    •Pushing and Pulling: They may push wheelchairs, beds, and medical equipment.

    •Standing and Walking: LPNs often spend long periods standing and walking throughout their shifts.

    •Physical Endurance: They need the stamina to handle physically demanding tasks for extended periods, sometimes working 8-12 hour shifts with minimal breaks.

    Mobility and Flexibility:

    •Bending and Stooping: These movements are necessary for tasks like assisting patients with personal care or retrieving items.

    •Reaching: LPNs need to reach above shoulder level (for IV poles, monitors), below the waist (for electrical plugs), and in front of their body to assist patients.

    •Squatting and Crouching: These positions may be needed for various patient care activities.

    •Kneeling, Crawling, and Climbing: While less frequent, these abilities might be necessary in specific situations.

    •Fine Motor Skills and Dexterity:

     

    --Manual Dexterity: This is crucial for operating equipment, handling syringes, adjusting switches, and manipulating small objects like IV tubing and electrode patches.

     

    --Grasping and Pinching: LPNs need to pick up and handle small items, use syringes, and operate equipment with their fingers and hands.

     

    --Writing and Typing: Accurate documentation is a key part of the job.

    Sensory Abilities:

    •Vision:

     

    --Near and Far Vision: The ability to see details up close (monitors, skin conditions) and at a distance (patients in a room).

     

    --Depth Perception and Peripheral Vision: Important for navigating the healthcare environment and observing patients.

     

    --Color Vision: To distinguish color-coded supplies, skin changes, and labels.

     

    •Hearing:

     

    --Normal Speaking Level and Faint Sounds: To understand verbal communication and hear subtle body sounds (blood pressure, lung sounds).

     

    --Hearing Alarms: To respond to critical alerts from monitors and other systems.

     

    •Touch (Tactile): To feel pulses, assess skin temperature and texture, and identify changes in a patient's condition.

    •Smell (Olfactory): To detect odors that may indicate infection or other medical issues.

    Other Physical Considerations:

    •Balance: Maintaining balance in various positions is important for safety.

    •Moving Quickly: The ability to respond rapidly to emergencies.

    Desired Qualifications:

    1.Ability to work rotating holidays and weekends. Ability to participate in in-service training or staff meetings, which may be scheduled outside of usually assigned hours of work.

    2.Ability to work with a variety of personalities, exercise tact and good judgment in dealing with varying and sometimes stressful situations.

    3.Must be punctual, with a good attendance record.

    4.Must be mature and emotionally stable using calm and kind tone of voice, remaining calm in difficult or unusual circumstances.

    5.Promoted independence, not dependence, with residents offering choices and fostering self-help skills.

    6.Must be able to prioritize and organize work effectively and efficiently.

    7.Must be flexible and adaptable to changing situations.

    8.Must be compassionate and work with tact and ethical awareness.

    9.Must work as a team member with other personnel, supervisor and RN.

    10.Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills.

    VISION PLAN

    This voluntary plan offers affordable vision coverage for routine eye exams, eyeglass lenses and frames, and contact lenses. Discounts on hearing exams and hearing aids are also included.

    LIFE INSURANCE

    The Order provides a Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance becomes effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance provided is based on your annual salary as follows:

    You may also purchase additional life insurance in increments of one, two, three, or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available.

     

    Employer provided life insurance in excess of $50,000 is subject to imputed tax (a tax on the value of the premium).

    VACATION

    Paid vacation is accrued based upon FTE and the number of years employed. Vacation is cumulative from year to year to a maximum of 240 hours. Employees working 100% time receive the following:

    HOLIDAY PAY

    Employees receive paid holidays. The Order recognizes ten official holidays during the calendar year: New Years' Eve Day, New Years' Eve, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Leased employees may receive additional holidays.

    SICK LEAVE

    Full-time employees earn up to 9 days of sick leave per year, pro-rated based on FTE. Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may also use accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members.

    LONG-TERM DISABILITY

    After one year of benefit eligible employment, the Order provides coverage in the event of an illness or injury which prevents you from working. This plan provides a benefit which equals 60% of your basic monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000. This benefit will be payable for the benefit duration, provided the employee is unable to perform the usual and customary duties of his/her occupation.     FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS / HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS

    These plans allow employees to set aside a portion of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses.

    TUITION ASSISTANCE - PREP SCHOOL

    The tuition assistance plan is an educational grant provided by the Order to a qualified child of a full time employee towards meeting the tuition costs at Saint John's Preparatory School. The dependent must meet the eligibility criteria in order to receive this benefit. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit.

    TUITION REMISSION - EMPLOYEE

    Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by the Order to full-time employees. A full-time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free education benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. The payment of special fees is the responsibility of the employee. Full-time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer; up to a maximum of 2 courses per year. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit.

    PARENTAL LEAVE

    A three week (15 days) paid leave will be granted to eligible employees due to the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment.

    EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

    The Employee Assistance Program (Vital Work Life) is currently a free counseling resource available to all employees and immediate family members. EAP counselors can help you identify problems and concerns regarding family, marriage, emotions, alcohol or drugs, financial difficulties, legal issues and job stress. All contacts between you, your family, and the EAP are provided as a benefit from the Order and are kept strictly confidential.

    RETIREMENT PROGRAM

    The Order provides two 403(b) retirement plans: A Defined Contribution Plan and a Supplemental Tax Deferred Annuity Plan. These plans are administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA). Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following date of hire, unless the employee elects to opt-out.

    This voluntary plan offers an additional level of financial protection for you and your family in the event of a serious accident or illness.
