    Academic Program Support Specialist, CUNY Black Male Initiative

    POSITION DETAILS

    The CUNY Black Male Initiative (BMI) within the Office of Student Affairs at the City University of New York's (CUNY) system-wide student development program dedicated to increasing, encouraging, and supporting the inclusion and educational success of students from groups underrepresented in higher education. Now in its 20th year, CUNY BMI has grown to serve over 8,000 participants across 25 campus-based programs. Through academic support, leadership development, research opportunities, and partnerships, BMI continues to advance equity and student success across the University.

     

    Reporting to the Executive Director of the CUNY Black Male Initiative, the Academic Program Support Specialist will support the development, coordination, and delivery of programs and services that strengthen student engagement, academic achievement, and retention across CUNY BMI’s network of campus projects. The Specialist will collaborate with campus-based program staff, faculty, and administrators, and will assist in the implementation of BMI’s emerging Undergraduate Research Program.

    In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

    + Design, organize and implement CUNY BMI Undergraduate Research Program and annual student research conference.

    + Provide guidance to students and campus program staff in the submission of research proposals and related academic enrichment activities.

    + Plan student workshops, seminars, and advising sessions focused on academic success, research engagement, and professional development.

    + Promote program opportunities and advise students, faculty, and administrators on BMI services, policies, and procedures.

    + Collaborate with faculty, counselors, and campus staff to track student progress, monitor program utilization, and assess effectiveness of student support activities.

    + Identify external funding opportunities and provide support for proposal development and compliance with sponsor requirements.

    + Collect, analyze, and report data on program activities, student outcomes, and research participation for accountability and institutional reporting.

    + Prepare annual reports, communications, and program materials for both internal and external stakeholders to drive decision-making.

    + Perform other related duties as assigned.

    NOTES:

    -Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

     

    -Frequent travel across 25 CUNY campuses throughout the 5 boroughs in New York City.

     

    -Occasional evening and weekend hours are required to support programming and related activities.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    MINIMUM

    Bachelor's degree and four years’ related experience required.

    PREFERRED

    + Experience in academic program coordination, student support, or higher education administration.

    + Background supporting undergraduate research, academic enrichment initiatives, or programs serving underrepresented student populations.

    + Exposure to STEM-focused initiatives, student research, or related programming.

    + Demonstrated experience with quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.

    + Experience in data analysis, reporting, and program assessment to support decision-making and accountability.

    + Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

    + Ability to collaborate effectively and build strong working relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, administrators, and external partners.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); familiarity with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions or similar student information systems.

    CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

    Provides educational development activities supporting a targeted academic program.

     

    - Assists in developing and preparing program offerings, curricula, guidelines, and related communications

     

    - Promotes program and advises students and College stakeholders on services, policies, and procedures

     

    - Advises faculty, counselors, tutors, administrators and others on program goals, activities, and best practices

     

    - Provides student services such as workshops, seminars, and advising sessions

     

    - Coordinates efforts of faculty, staff, and other service providers to monitor and assess utilization, student progress, and program effectiveness

     

    - Performs related duties as assigned.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    The salary range is **$79,598 - $90,838** commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.

     

    CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
