This posting is for two Electronics Technician I Positions Nos. 60020526 & 60020541 located in the Carthage Traffic Services Unit. You only need to apply once to be considered for both positions. The ELT I positions will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of Electrical, Electronic, and Computerized Traffic Control systems within Division 8 and will also assist in the installation, testing, and inspection of new Traffic Control Systems and existing systems when upgraded. The duties to be performed include installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing out electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantling and reassembling components, replacing worn or faulty parts, and installation/removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices . Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by the supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Additional duties/skills include general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trade, ability to diagnose source of equipment failures, ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. The Electronics Technician I is expected to p erform assigned tasks and understand/follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safe work environment, maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished, keep an accurate record of time worked and all materials used via computer, have considerable knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT traffic signal specification s, have the a bility to trouble shoot nonstandard traffic electronic equipment or equipment with incomplete or missing documentation, p ossess the ability to lift up to 85 lbs. or more shoulder high, and be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Work is subject to be performed in all environmental conditions including extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Position is subject to emergency callback and overtime and may require non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights, and times of emergency. ***Anticipated Vacancy for Pos No. 60020541***
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components
+ Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams
+ Knowledge of the National Electric Code
+ Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision
+ Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions
Additional Expectations:
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
