Role Overview:
This position will primarily work in the Radiochemistry laboratory, analyzing water (EPA) and food (FDA) samples for radioactivity, as the senior-level analyst responsible for EPA regulatory testing. Candidate will be expected to obtain Authorized User (AU) status with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission for use of the laboratory's radioactive materials.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

The essential functions of this role are as follows:
As a Technical Expert:
+ Operate, maintain and train other staff on multiple highly sophisticated analytical instruments such as Gas Proportional Counters (GPC), Gamma Spectrometers, Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometers (ICP/MS), Liquid Scintillation Counters (LSC), Liquid Chromatograph – Tandem Mass Spectrometers (LCMSMS), Time of Flight Mass Spectrometers (LCTOF), or Gas Chromatograph-Tandem or Single Mass Spectrometers (GCMSMS, GCMS).
+ Implement new procedures to meet changing Federal or State laws or rules.
+ Identify new analytical needs in the agency or program and conducts research in both literature and the laboratory to develop analytical methods to address those needs.
+ Lead development projects with thorough documentation.
As a Quality Assurance Expert
+ Has extensive knowledge of appropriate state and federal laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, and policies relative to the practice of quality assurance with the ability to apply statistical principles to the evaluation of data for the Chemistry Laboratory to ensure the production of high-quality data with documented analytical integrity that meets rigorous accreditation or certification requirements.
+ Interpret federal guidelines and regulations (EPA, FDA, USDA) to develop internal guidance on program operation and development including any software or programming needs.
+ Act as liaison with federal or other agencies for laboratory audits.
+ Evaluate processes to meet changing Federal or State laws or rules.
+ Identify quality needs in the agency or program and develops long-term strategies to deal with these new needs.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:
+ The ideal candidate for this role should have a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience as an analytical chemist. Completion of relevant educational degrees may substitute for equivalent years of experience.
+ Broad knowledge of principles and practices of analytical, clinical, organic, inorganic and/or radiochemistry with specialized knowledge in related scientific areas such as statistics.
+ Broad knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP) and good automated laboratory practices (GALP).
+ Ability to ensure the data produced contributes to the IDOH focus on data driven policy by ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the data produced in the IDOH Chemistry Laboratories
+ Ability to keep abreast of new developments in the field and determine relevance to the IDOH scope of work.
+ Thorough knowledge of all federal policies, guidance, goals, and procedures of the relevant program area.
+ Ability to lead projects and generate organized, detailed, and compliant records.
+ Broad knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration laboratory safety practices and procedures.
+ Ability to determine critical project elements and establish and meet program objectives.
+ Technical Expert.
+ Expertise with a variety of complex analytical instrumentation and computer software, with the ability to troubleshoot those systems and train others.
+ Must be able to develop or modify methods for new analyses.
+ Ability to contribute to scientific knowledge through papers, presentations, posters or as a representative on national workgroups or committees.
+ Quality Assurance Expert.
+ In-depth understanding of EPA, CLIA, USDA, FDA and/or ISO/IEC 17025 quality assurance requirements and their application to the laboratory.
+ Thorough knowledge of agency programs and processes as related to the discipline of chemistry.
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
