Summary This position serves as a member of the health care team providing continuous monitoring of the cardiac telemetry central monitoring station and provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care related activities. Additionally, the incumbent will have opportunities to provide direct patient care. This position will be located in the Telehealth Section at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) in San Antonio, Texas. Responsibilities ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Observes, analyzes and records the cardiac rhythms of patients monitored via the cardiac telemetry centralized monitoring station; Records ECG strips and vital signs representative of changes in patients status and reports changes to the RN/LVN caring for the patient; Recognizes and documents arrhythmias; Reports to the RN/LVN in a timely manner; Leaves the central telemetry monitoring room only when properly relieved; Documents and maintains telemetry patient logs and related data; Detects and reports all equipment malfunctions and/or loss of ECG monitor signal to nursing personnel and, when appropriate, to biomedical engineers/graphic control; Documents nature of the problem in the telemetry equipment problem log; Includes information in report to oncoming personnel; Performs phlebotomy/blood draws; Institutes CPR; Assists in all hospital codes as assigned; Provides 1:1 observation of patients with special needs; Reinforces patient education provided by the nurse or physician on patient's role in various procedures, safety measures, equipment set-up and use, and on aspects of discharge teaching; Performs other duties as assigned. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP) Qualifications ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ In addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency to qualify for this position, you must also meet one of the following: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-6 - Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes performing central telemetry station monitoring, which involves observing, analyzing and recording patients' cardiac rhythms, ECG strips and vital signs; reports changes in patient status to the RN/LVN; detects and reports all equipment malfunctions; performs phlebotomy; institute CPR; assists in all hospital codes; provides 1:1 observations; updates patient medical records; and reinforce patient education. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title; duties; month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Possess the successfully completion of half a year of graduate education (usually 9 semester hours) that is directly related to the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts required. ~OR~ COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Experience must be detailed, and transcripts required. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Communication Patient Care Technical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Duties require extensive periods of monitoring central telemetry station computers, sitting, standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and similar unrestricted activities that require use of effective body mechanics. May be assigned on a unit on any tour of duty and relieves in other areas as required. The physical surrounding (environment of care) involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety procedures, e.g., contagious diseases, verbal or physical abuse from emotionally disturbed patients.
