    General Description

    The LaGuardia Community College (LaGCC) ACCES Pre-Employment Transition Services Program assists students with disabilities in successfully transitioning from postsecondary education to meaningful employment opportunities. Peer Mentors play a vital role in this process by conducting engaging mentoring sessions with Pre-ETS students. They develop trusting relationships that help students navigate their transition from high school to college, cultivate effective study strategies, and enhance life skills applicable both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, Peer Mentors encourage students to become more involved on campus by connecting them with appropriate workshops and resources.

     

    About LaGuardia Community College

     

    Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree and certificate programs, as well as dozens of workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 25,000 students. More than one-third of our degree-seeking students were born outside of the United States, coming to LaGuardia from 136 countries and speaking forty-three heritage languages. More than half are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest live in Brooklyn and beyond. Approximately two-thirds of our degree students receive financial aid.     Other Duties

    + Meet one-on-one with Pre-ETS students for one or two 50-minute sessions per week.

    + Document sessions by ensuring students log-in before and log-out after their sessions.

    + Submit Report Forms summarizing the content and outcomes of each session for every Program Student.

    + Assess individual student needs and create personalized support plans.

    + Monitor and evaluate student progress towards their short-term and long-term goals throughout the semester.

    + Complete Student Write-Ups at the end of each semester, detailing student progress and achievements.

    + Communicate any training needs or student concerns to the Program Coordinator.

    + Assist with programming and workshops as directed by the Program Coordinator.

    + Empower students to build self-confidence, enabling them to make mindful decisions, solve problems, and achieve academic success.

    + Help students develop active learning strategies to promote positive study habits.

    + Encourage students to engage actively in their learning process by setting and working towards personal goals.

    + Increase student involvement on campus by promoting participation in events, student organizations, and volunteer opportunities.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Desire to help students succeed

    + Currently enrolled as a student at LaGuardia Community College

    + Completion of one semester of coursework

    + Minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills

    + Awareness and sensitivity to individual learning styles and needs

    + Ability to apply study strategies, goal setting, organizational skills & time management in sessions.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience mentoring other students.

    + Experience working with individuals with disabilities and diverse learning needs.

    + Completion of the Peer Leader Training Course.
