    About the Position

    Under administrative direction and general supervision by the Environmental Health & Safety Director, the Environmental Compliance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and carrying out all aspects of WWU's hazardous waste program and other various environmental compliance regulations. This work includes ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety laws, regulations, codes, and standards, with a focus on hazardous materials, hazardous waste, radiation safety, and environmental sampling and monitoring. They participate in related activities of a non-routine nature such as hazard/incident investigations, hazardous materials safety training, spill response and support, indoor air quality concerns, and confined space/ hot work permitting that require independent judgement and decision making. They also serve as a member of the University’s Confined Space Rescue Team.

     

    The State HR classification for this position is Safety Officer 3.

    Required Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in environmental, biological, or physical science or closely related field AND three years of professional experience in environmental health and safety programs OR equivalent education/ experience

    + A Master’s degree in environmental, biological, or physical science or closely related field may be substituted for two years of the above professional work experience requirement

    + Experience working directly with hazardous materials or chemical management

    + Demonstrated professional written and verbal communication skills

    + High level of organizational and time-management skills

    + Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with community partners fostering diversity, equity and inclusion

    + Proficiency with Microsoft suite

    + Experience in team and/ or project management skills

    + Ability and willingness to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or other respirator in emergency situations

    + Valid driver’s license

    + Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience in university and higher education settings

    + Experience working directly in the radiation safety field

    + Completion of 40-Hour HAZWOPER training

    + Completion of Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

    + Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification

    + Master's degree in occupational safety and health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety studies, or similar

    + Project management experience

    + Program development experience

    Salary$6,134 - $8,252/month depending on qualifications and experience
