Description
Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin , sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.
The City of Norfolk, Maritime Center – Nauticus is seeking to hire a Battleship Operations Manager. This position is responsible for managing the overall daily operations and educational tours of the Battleship while supervising staff and volunteers to deliver a memorable experience for small groups, large groups, daily visitors, and VIP guests. This position will collaborate across departments to create content for Tours to enhance guest experiences on the Battleship. The Battleship Manager will have close collaboration with the Exhibits team for curatorial needs, and research.
Department Hiring Salary Range: $42,629 - $49,023
Essential Functions
Essen tial functions include but are not limited to:
+ Manage the Operations and Educational Tours of the battleship to include staff supervision, volunteers, and scheduling.
+ Manages volunteers and staff by determining staffing needs, developing policies and procedures, assisting with recruiting, training and monitoring staff, maintaining personnel files, and preparing statistical reports and completing timesheets for payroll.
+ Develop safety and emergency plans for the Battleship.
+ Create content for Tours in collaboration with departments.
+ Plan and coordinate special events on the Battleship by working closely with the Events Department. These can include gathering data and answering questions regarding upcoming events, scheduling staff and outside lecturers, and coordinating arrangements for vendors, equipment and entertainment.
+ Collaborate with the Exhibits Team on curatorial opportunities to include researching, planning, organizing, and assisting with installation.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One year of experience.
Experience working in the maritime museum industry preferred.

+ Must be enthusiastic, motivated and enjoy working with people.
+ Outstanding customer service skills, with demonstrable ability to act on a dime to address a service need.
+ Strong basic computer skills, including using email, navigating the internet, and working in MS Office applications.
+ Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and occasional evenings.
+ Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
+ Must be comfortable working and moving about tight, confined spaces on the Battleship.
+ Ability to work with a team and independently.
+ Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: 1 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510
Work Hours: Flexible schedule required, must be available to work consistently Saturday and/or Sunday’s, some evenings, and holidays. 40 hours per week. 9am to 5:30pm

+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
