    The energy industry is undergoing rapid and dramatic changes, transforming the utility landscape to enhance reliability and sustainability. In response, Jacobs is expanding its Energy & Power Solutions team to tackle the complexities of energy resiliency and decarbonization to deliver a cleaner and more secure energy future. We are seeking a department manager for our Energy and Power mechanical engineering design staff. In this role, you will manage a growing team of mechanical engineers located in multiple offices across North America supporting a diverse mix energy design projects that include thermal energy production, power generation, combined heat and power systems, district heating and cooling, energy storage, and more.

     

    As the mechanical engineering department manager, you will be actively engaged in projects while also managing your staff and coordinating manpower resources for the broader portfolio of energy and power projects. In this leadership role, you will be responsible for fostering a culture of high performance, collaboration, opportunity and inclusion. You will be accountable for developing and implementing efficient work processes, overseeing the successful execution of quality assurance/quality control and managing your teams to achieve successful outcomes by consistently delivering projects on time and on budget. This role will require a strong team-player attitude with ability to consistently demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism, integrity, mutual respect and accountability to others. Your team will routinely engage with our clients, evaluate their energy needs, develop concept-level plans and solutions, and take these through detailed mechanical design to enable full execution of the solution. We offer and deliver a true "end to end" life-cycle service from exploration, development, operation, and repowering/retirement.

     

    Demonstrated abilities include a broad understanding of thermal systems, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mechanical engineering design conditions. Experience in consulting, design, design management will be highly regarded, as will experience in Owner’s Engineer roles, contract management, and advisory (technical advisor/due diligence) roles, as well as strategic project development experience.

     

    Your primary responsibilities will focus on managing and growing your team to provide advisory and technical design solutions for energy project development and technical delivery. The team currently consists of approximately 40 mechanical engineers with varying levels of experience and capabilities. You will be expected to create a collaborative environment that fosters a team mentality and a positive learning environment for less experienced staff. You will also participate in recruitment activities, talent acquisition, and technical/professional development of staff to grow the Energy and Power business.

     

    You will collaborate with our Client Account Managers and sales professionals on pursuits of strategic importance to the firm and prepare work plans, design schedules, and design fee estimates for engineering design and consulting projects.

     

    You’ll be expected to possess highly collaborative and sophisticated communication and creative problem-solving skills. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated ability to anticipate challenges while supporting large teams responsible for the daily details of project delivery.     * Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline

    * Professional Engineering License

    * 12+ years of design and consulting experience working with clients, service providers, contractors, OEMs, Owner/Developers, Lenders and/or regulators in the energy field.

    * 2+ years of personnel management experience

    * Proven ability to engage with clients, develop relationships and win work, and then deliver innovative solutions providing value to both the client and provider.

    * Ability to work independently on a large array of tasks while providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff.

    * Demonstrated ability for higher-level strategic, exploration, concept, and development planning for new project opportunities, including knowledge and application of new and emerging technologies.

    * Demonstrated skills in concept and developed design optimization programs to guide sound technical guidance for decision making.

    * Strong communication and technical writing skills

    Other highly regarded qualifications include prior experience with:

    * Thermal power generation systems and district energy networks

    * Combined heat and power (CHP) and cogeneration systems

    * Thermal utility plants and distribution systems (steam, hot water, chilled water)

    * Renewable energy systems including geothermal and thermal energy networks

    * Energy storage systems including thermal and mechanical storage

    * Campus utility master planning or decarbonization/climate response planning

    * Mechanical system modeling and simulation tools

    * Piping and instrumentation design, stress analysis, and fluid system optimization

    * Life cycle cost evaluations
