Department Summary

Established in 2012, the Transportation Services Department is an auxiliary unit within Finance and Administration whose goal is to provide customer-oriented sustainable transportation and parking programs and services to students, employees, and visitors to the University of Oregon. Transportation Services covers its expenses and operations through revenue generation, largely through permit sales, meter revenue, events, and citations. The unit’s annual budget is approximately $6 million. Transportation Services maintains more than 3,800 parking spaces on or adjacent to campus in more than 60 lots and two multi-level parking garages.

Duck Rides is an evening shuttle program for all university students, staff, and faculty that is dedicated to safety, accessibility, and reducing nighttime travel risks.

The Access Shuttle is an on campus ride service provided at no cost to students, faculty, staff, and visitors with conditions that limit mobility.

Position Summary

The Transporter is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for passengers. The Access Shuttle Transporter drives a wheelchair-accessible van to transport passengers with conditions that limit mobility. The Duck Rides Transporter is responsible for transporting both able bodied passengers and those with conditions that limit their mobility using a wheelchair-accessible van.

This position plays a crucial role in providing timely scheduled and on-demand rides while assisting passengers with boarding, exiting, and mobility device security. Additionally, the Transporter communicates shuttle policies clearly, helps passengers navigate the scheduling process, and maintains accurate records through the use of a dispatching app. Under the guidance of the Shuttle Program Manager, the Transporter schedules vehicle maintenance and ensures the van remains in proper working condition.

Key responsibilities of the Transporter role include the safe operation of program vehicles, reporting vehicle safety issues or maintenance concerns, responding to scheduling changes, delays, or emergencies with professionalism and problem-solving skills. Maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle, performing routine safety inspections, and fueling the van as needed are also critical to ensuring smooth shuttle operations.

The Transporter interacts regularly with passengers, providing courteous and helpful service while ensuring their safety and comfort. Additionally, this role involves interactions with Risk Management in the event of accidents or safety concerns and engagement with campus departments to facilitate transportation during special events. This role requires the ability to make well-informed decisions, such as choosing the safest and most efficient routes based on traffic, weather, and campus events. The transporter must assess passenger needs, provide assistance when necessary, and enforce shuttle policies effectively.

It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position.

The Transporter appointment runs approximately 9 months per year following the University of Oregon academic calendar.

The Access Shuttle (1 position) operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Duck Rides (4 positions) operates 7 days a week, from 5:00 pm to 12:00 am. Shifts are assigned within the hours of operation.

Minimum Requirements

• One year of full-time experience operating a van or other large passenger vehicle, AND

• Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to qualify for and maintain UO Driver’s Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in higher education.
