Description
Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH), a nationally recognized leader in cardiothoracic care and one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals (Healthgrades), is seeking a skilled Physician Assistant to join our Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) team. The CTICU PA will play a vital role in delivering exceptional care to critically ill patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic procedures. Working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, this position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge medicine in a high-acuity, academic medical center on Long Island.
Key Responsibilities
+ Conduct thorough patient assessments, including physical exams, hemodynamic monitoring, and interpretation of diagnostics (e.g., chest X-rays, echocardiograms, lab results).
+ Manage post-operative care for CTICU patients, including those on mechanical circulatory support (e.g., ECMO, IABP) and ventilators.
+ Perform procedures such as arterial line insertion, central venous catheter placement, Swan-Ganz Catheter placement, chest tube placement and chest tube removal.
+ Collaborate with cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, and nurses to develop and adjust treatment plans, including medication management.
+ Respond to acute changes in patient condition, initiating emergency protocols as needed.
+ Educate patients and families on post-operative recovery and discharge planning.
+ Document care accurately in the Epic EMR system, ensuring compliance with hospital standards.
+ Participate in quality improvement initiatives and multidisciplinary rounds to enhance patient outcomes.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Current NCCPA certification. Valid New York State PA license or eligibility to obtain prior to start date. BLS and ACLS certification. Proficiency in critical care procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
1–2 years of critical care or cardiothoracic experience (new graduates with strong CTICU rotations will be considered). Experience with cardiothoracic surgical patients and advanced monitoring systems. Familiarity with Epic EMR and academic medical center workflows. Critical care certification.
