SCHEDULE
Regular Full-Time Position
Must be available primarily Monday through Friday as early as 6:00 AM to as late as 6:00 PM, including occasional weekends.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
$34.00 to $42.68 hourly
Actual pay commensurate with experience
JOB SUMMARY
Provides bench coverage and may train others in areas including, but not limited to Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, and/or Microbiology during clinical rotations of medical lab technician and medical technology students, and/or other approved trainees. Assists with phlebotomy training, laboratory information system training, and outreach efforts as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician. Provides bench coverage during critical operation needs and/or trains others in technical areas during clinical rotations. (60%)
2. Performs tests and calculations, documents and reports results following prescribed instructions and predetermined criteria.
3. Adheres to established QC policies and procedures, including but not limited to documentation, corrective actions, and proficiency testing.
4. Recognizes abnormal or unusual pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical problems and follows established corrective action policies.
5. Independently operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment, following written criteria.
6. Maintains procedures, records, and logs following established procedures.
7. Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).
8. Plans, participates, and coordinates outreach initiatives and assists with planning and coordinating clinical rotations. (15%)
9. Plans, participates, coordinates and creates educational outreach content for students, teachers and educational institutions through technical career fairs, presentations, workshops and facility tours.
10. Provides career counseling and technical advice during clinical rotations, internship, externship, and apprenticeship programs; and for current employees looking to obtain their phlebotomy certifications or MLT/MT certifications and licensing.
11. Plans and coordinates clinical rotations for internships, externships, apprenticeships and clinical rotations.
12. Creates, supports and participates in training and development programs and initiatives. (15%)
13. Develops training materials and curriculum for a variety of training opportunities for outreach, rotation programs and employees.
14. Conducts training & assessments within Diagnostic Laboratory Services, including but not limited to, Phlebotomy, Laboratory Information System and Train the Trainer.
15. Gathers data and generates reports on attendance, evaluations, and other data relevant to training and education programs.
16. Registration of employees in training programs. Processing forms for registration and payment.
17. Creates courses, programs, classes, and develops training aids for Enterprise Learning Management (ELM).
18. Provides additional support in pre-analytic processes and training for external clients.
19. Supports technical and clinical areas to develop and maintain various procedures and continual educational material. (10%)
20. Developing and maintaining access to online resources.
21. Creates Educational materials and visual aids utilizing various technologies and training tools.
22. Provides guidance in pre-analytical processes in standard operating procedures.
23. May perform specimen collection by venipuncture.
24. Performs other duties as required.

JOB DEMANDS
_Typical Physical Demands:_
+ Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
+ Requires corrected hearing to normal range.
+ Able to identify and distinguish colors.
+ Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, lab coats, gloves, face shields.
+ Able to stand and walk up to four (4) hours per day continuously.
+ Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.
+ Able to bend, lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds.
+ Able to sit and/or use PC up to four (4) hours continuously.
+ Requires ground and air travel occasionally.
_Typical Working Conditions:_
+ Work environment includes conditions common to administrative offices and hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials possible.
+ Works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.
QUALIFICATIONS
_Education:_
Required:
+ Medical Laboratory Technician: Associate degree in medical laboratory technology/technician from an accredited institution.
+ Medical Technologist: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
_Experience:_
Required:
+ Two (2) years as a medical technologist or four (4) years as a medical laboratory technician.
+ One (1) year of experience training students/employees in a laboratory.
+ Working knowledge of a laboratory information system (LIS).
Preferred:
+ Experience training students/employees in a clinical laboratory.
+ Experience with Antrim.
_Certification:_
Required:
+ Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
_Licensure:_
Required:
+ Hawaii State license as Technologist or Technician.
_Skills:_
+ Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
+ Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
+ Excellent customer service skills.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software.
_Other Qualifications:_
+ Special Requirement: If position requires bench coverage in the Blood Bank Department, certification and Hawaii State license as a Technologist is required.
