Job Description
THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE OFFERED A SALARY BETWEEN $70,022 - $75,000.
The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services, and provides subsidized child care vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention, placement and programs for youth in the community.
ACS’ Division of Child and Family Well-being (CFWB) designs and executes strategies to support caregivers, children, and communities, so they can thrive and enjoy self-determination. A critical piece of CFWB’s portfolio is the operation of the City’s subsidized child care voucher system -- one of the largest child care assistance programs in the country. ACS provides vouchers to tens of thousands of low-income and child welfare-involved families, allowing parents and caregivers to access affordable child care at the provider of their choice while they pursue work, education, or training.
The Office of Child Safety and Injury Prevention (OCSIP), within the ACS Division of Child and Family Well-Being, promotes strategies and interventions that address sleep-related infant injuries, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and child poisoning caused by exposure to inadequately stored medicines, household cleaners, cannabis-infused edibles and other substances, as well as other significant causes of fatal and severe unintentional injuries that primarily affect children under age six, who are more vulnerable to injuries and fatalities.
The Injury Prevention Coordinator will promote OCSIP’s child injury efforts by disseminating free information and resources and educating NYC communities about strategies to prevent sleep-related infant injury deaths,Shaken Baby Syndrome, poisoning prevention, and other significant causes of severe and fatal unintentional injuries that primarily affect children under age six, who are more vulnerable to injuries and fatalities. The Injury Prevention Coordinator will offer free training, education, and resources to New Yorkers, specifically parents and caregivers of young children, who typically experience heightened stress and fatigue especially those caring for babies and toddlers.
OCSIP’s efforts include free training and child safety resources to parents, caregivers and child-serving professionals, symposia and public awareness campaigns to increase awareness of the leading causes of unintentional child injuries and how to prevent them, and collaborations with Mayoral agencies and community-based organizations to make it easier for New York City families to find and access what they need to keep children safe at home, as they play, and in their communities.
Under the direction of the Director of the Office of Child Safety and Injury Prevention, the Injury Prevention Coordinator will promote child injury prevention strategies by disseminating information and educating communities to ensure the safety well-being of NYC’s children. Specific duties of the Injury Prevention Coordinator will include but not be limited to:
- Provide awareness to diverse communities on the risk of significant causes of severe and fatal unintentional injuries including unsafe sleep practices, Shaken Baby Syndrome and unintentional poisoning caused by exposure to inadequately stored medicines, household cleaners, cannabis-infused edibles, and other substances that primarily affect children under age six.
- Work closely with the Director and Senior Leadership to develop and implement outreach strategies to reduce incidents of preventable injuries, specifically those related to unsafe sleep practices, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and unintentional poisoning.
- Work collaboratively with prospective parents, grandparents, and caregivers citywide to identify and reduce risks, strengthen protective factors, and provide resources to ensure child safety.
- Conduct training sessions and workshops related to infant safe sleep practice citywide using activities, experiences, audio visuals and other aids.
- Attend meetings and conferences to establish effective professional working relations with internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H), NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS), the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA), pediatricians, doctors, and community-based organizations to identify and address potential barriers parents and caregivers face to prevent unintentional injuries to children and strong messaging of strategies to prevent unintentional injuries to children.
- Coordinate engagement of all stakeholders’ input in messaging through focus groups and media.
- Coordinate community organizing events and convene weekly calendared events, including trainings for strong messaging of child safety strategies and seasonal campaigns.
- Support evaluation and revision of outreach campaign strategies to target new and prospective parents, grandparents, and caregivers citywide.
- Assist in identifying community districts with the highest rates of preventable child injuries and conduct culturally sensitive and linguistically accessible training, messaging, and outreach campaigns.
- Assist in identifying jurisdictions that have had successful child injury prevention strategies.
- Generate reports to outline program activities and evaluate program effectiveness.

Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
