    Posting Description

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences, to join a team focused on developing an early warning system for climate tipping points in the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre (SPG) as part of the POLEMIX program, funded by the Forecasting Tipping Points initiative. This role involves integrating autonomous profiling observations with the ECCO (Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean) machinery and leveraging the Julia computing language to advance our understanding of ocean mixing, freshwater budgets, and climate stability; working with oceanographers, climate scientists, and modelers to create and improve a digital twin framework that uses emulators to better represent ocean mixing and forcing; and working will contribute to next-generation ECCO estimates of the SPG, utilizing high-resolution nested models to improve predictions of climate tipping points.

    Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in Oceanography, Climate Science, Computational Modeling, or a related field by the date of hire; strong background in ocean dynamics, climate modeling, and computational analysis; proficiency in Julia (or Python) programming; experience with ocean models (e.g., MITgcm) and analyzing their budgets; demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and collaborate effectively within a team; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and a track record of publishing research findings. Additional experience with autonomous data collection systems (e.g., profiling floats), Lagrangian analysis, adjoint modeling, AI/ML techniques, and High-Performance Computing (HPC) will be considered.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter outlining their research interests, qualifications, and relevant experience, a curriculum vitae (CV), and the names and contact information of three references.

Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.

Expected start date: January 15, 2026
