    INTERVIEWS FOR SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL BE HELD OCTOBER 14, 2025.

     

    The Airport will be hosting TWO interns for the 2025-2026 school year. These positions will be hosted in the Nevada County Information and General Services Department and will report directly to the Airport Manager or the Airport Lead Worker.

    Functions of Agency/Department:

    The Nevada County Airport plays a vital role in the safety and economic viability of Nevada County. The Nevada County Airport is home to many types of aircraft including home-built, commercial charter, ultralight, and private. Additionally, the airport is home to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and US Forest Service Grass Valley Air Attack Base. This center of aerial wild land fire-fighting provides initial attack and longer -term support of wild land fire-fighting operations with based California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE) aircraft, and United States Forest Service (USFS) aircraft. Search & Rescue, Medivac, and local, state and federal law enforcement agencies also use the airport year-round. Airport businesses located on the property provide both jobs and tax revenue in the local community.

    Intern Duties and Responsibilities:

    Under general supervision, services and maintains the County Airport; refuels and services general aviation aircraft; performs fueling and field safety checks; and performs related work as required. Intern duties will be assigned based on skill level and will be coordinated around the Airport’s staff calendars and workloads.

    Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    + Monitors fuel levels daily, fuels and services aircraft, and orders fuel as needed; reconciles fuel sales and inventory

    + Performs field safety checks

    + Inspects airport facilities, runways, runway lights, fueling and other equipment daily to determine maintenance needs, alterations and repairs

    + Performs minor repairs to runways, taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, aircraft tie-downs, and buildings and grounds; confers with management on priorities, needed repairs and inventory levels

    + Provides security of airport properties and general aviation aircraft

    + Operates UNICOM (Universal Communications) for runway and weather advisories

    + Collects cash and processes credit card transactions; posts journals and reconciles daily balances; prepares billing statements and maintains accounts receivable records; prepares vendor reimbursement statements

    + Compiles data and maintains daily records of airport operations and prepares periodic reports

    + Assigns parking spaces for permanent and transient aircraft and schedules appointments for rental aircraft

    + Provides information to the public regarding the airport

    + May provide for snow and ice removal in aircraft operating areas during inclement weather

    + Performs custodial duties as needed

     

    Candidates selected for the position would be asked to perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels to enhance interns' familiarity and skillset within the Airport operations.

     

    Interns need to have the mobility to reach, bend, twist, grasp, kneel and climb. Manual dexterity to operate precision tools and equipment. Strength, stamina and mobility to perform physical labor and lift and carry equipment, tools and supplies. Ability to climb a 10-foot ladder and drag 2" diameter fueling hose and nozzle to top of ladder. Vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen, and to inspect facilities and equipment. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone.

     

    Interns need to be able to work in exposure to inclement weather and temperature extremes.

     

    Interns need to have the willingness and ability to work unusual schedules and multiple shifts during emergencies or during periods of firefighting activities.

    Educational Requirements, Skills, Training, or Qualifications:

    This Internship is designed for any area of expertise, some areas that might be more pertinent could be students in science, agriculture or mechanics participating in the Nevada Union Joint High School District Career Technical Education Program. Must have a neat appearance, be detail-oriented, reliable, good written and oral communication skills. The County is a Microsoft Windows enterprise environment.

    Time Commitment:

    The intern would work approximately 2 hours per day Tuesday through Friday (2-3 days) each week. The overall internship could last up to 26 weeks during the school year (October – May, excluding Finals weeks and holidays). A typical schedule would require students to participate from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, Tuesday through Friday. Monday of each week will be reserved for classroom instruction on the school campus.

    Benefits of participating in an internship:

    This program prepares interns to contend for environmental health careers after postsecondary education completion. Through participation in the program, interns will acquire hands-on knowledge and skills related to:

     

    + Performing safety checks of airport equipment and facilities

    + Performing minor repairs to runways, taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, tie-downs, fueling equipment, and buildings and grounds

    + Operating snow removal, fueling and UNICOM equipment

    + Processing sales transactions and collecting monies

    + Performing basic mathematical calculations and keeping accurate financial records

    + Following verbal and written instructions

    + Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, dealing courteously and tactfully with the public

    + Exercising sound independent judgment within established guidelines

    + Monitoring and maintaining inventory levels for fuel and supplies

    + Compiling financial and statistical data and preparing periodic reports

    + Preparing billings and maintaining accounts receivable records

    + Use of computer programs related to process/track fuel sales and customer contacts.

    + Build their resume and explore career options and employment opportunities.

    + Gain an understanding of the local government workforce and culture.

    + Develop communication and interpersonal skills to aid in future job interviews.

     

    Interns who are earning school credit through an educational program may be eligible for a $298.00 stipend per semester, no more than $599.00 per calendar year upon completion of the internship (Board Resolution 21-110).
