    Job Description:

    The Academic Department Manager (ADM) for the Department of Africana Studies/Rites and Reason Theatre, manages the financial, administrative, and human resources operations for the Department, ensuring that financial and administrative practices conform to University policies. The incumbent serves as the liaison between the Department and other University units such as the Dean of the College, Graduate School, Dean of the Faculty, Registrar, Human Resources, Controller’s Office, Dining Services, Facilities Management and Campus Police.

     

    The ADM develops and implements internal procedures and protocols and plays a critical leadership role in support of budget management and analysis, supervises administrative staff, student affairs, grants/gifts/endowments administration, and performs other miscellaneous activities related to the management of the department and program. The ADM also has sufficient understanding of the Department’s mission/vision, programs, initiatives, projects, and services and the processes and resources required to support them to manage day-to-day operations while anticipating needs and working through challenges.

     

    The ADM works closely with the Department Chair to facilitate short and long-range strategic planning and the allocation of financial and budgetary activities. The position supports the Department Chair regarding the articulation of policies, protocols, and other communications to staff and faculty as well as working closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to administer the undergraduate and graduate programs. The ADM plays an essential role in all department matters and must exercise a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and sensitivity.

     

    Education and Experience

     

    + Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Financial and budget experience preferred.

    + Excellent time management skills, ability to assess priorities and pivot in response to pressing departmental needs.

    + Staff management i.e. hiring, supervision, employee evaluation, and salary review.

    + Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills.

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    + Substantial financial management skills.

    + Excellent computer skills with a strong aptitude for learning new systems.

    + Proficient in Excel.

    + Experience Microsoft Suites or Google platform, and Zoom/other video conferencing.

    Additional physical demands and working conditions:

    + Working commencement and other departmental and theater events on nights and weekends may be required.
