SUMMARY: As a member of the professional medical team, accurately prepares tissue samples for pathologist diagnosis by approved department procedures. They are expected to utilize complex problem solving skills in resolving tissue processing issues and instrument problems. This position requires exercise of independent judgment, theoretical knowledge and responsibility. They are to follow all regulatory lab requirements. In addition, they will develop the skills necessary to improve the long-term goals of the department including, but not limited to, development and implementation of policies and procedures, and act as the technology consultant and/or key operator of specialized instrumentation. They will also need to participate in rotations that involve grossing of biopsies specimens in the trim room.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Registers specimens accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and performs gross examination of biopsy specimens, ensuring precise patient and sample identification throughout the process.
+ Prepares, processes, embeds, cuts, and stains tissue samples to produce high-quality slides, including the accurate execution of special stains and immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures.
+ Prepares and monitors all reagents used in tissue processing and staining, adhering to proper dilutions and expiration dates, and promptly communicates inventory needs when reorder levels are reached.
+ Performs frozen sections for pathologists and conducts routine maintenance on laboratory equipment in accordance with established procedures and schedules.
+ Identifies and analyzes technical issues using scientific methods, reporting concerns to the supervisor or lead technologist, and actively participates in maintaining departmental readiness for regulatory compliance.
+ Complies with departmental procedures and policies, participates in meetings and continuing education, fosters a collaborative work environment, and communicates essential information to appropriate personnel.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Associate’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology or related field required or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
+ At least two years of relevant Medical Technology Laboratory experience required.
+ New York State Department of Education License or Limited Permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Certified Histological Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred, but not required.
+ Previous experience in a Clinical or Pathology Laboratory a benefit, but not required.

M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
